The National Directorate of Historical Heritage of the National Panamanian Institute of Culture reiterated today that the suspension of the collection of lots located in the "Corozal Silver Cemetery" to relatives is still valid, given that it is part of the sites declared historical heritage of the country.

The decision that has been in force since October 16, 2017 in the Corozal cemetery, near the banks of the Panama Canal, in the Pacific, is known because it was used for burials of Afro-Antilleans, members of the "Silver Community", who worked on the construction of the
waterway under US direction.

It is segregated from the American Cemetery of Corozal, which was only for the US military and civilians who were in this nation for 85 years. This terrain, unlike the Corozal Silver, is tended by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC).

This area was reverted to Panama in 1999, after compliance with the 1977 Torrijos-Carter Treaties.

Law 7 of March 13, 2012 created the Silver Community Memorial Park on the perimeter of the Corozal Cemetery and declared it a Historical Heritage, for which the National Institute of Culture is responsible for its administration, conservation and custody.

This space includes some 17 hectares where the remains of more than 16,000 people of some 17 nationalities rest, most of whom gave up their effort, sweat and life to make what they call today one of the wonders of the world, the Panama Canal.
