Major Crime is down in Chiriqui, say Police

The National Police in the province of Chiriqui assured that the levels of the crimes of greatest impact, robberies, murders, assaults and thefts decreased by 28% in recent months.

Theophilus Moreno, executive of the police zone of Chiriqui, said that the controls, raids and actions of prophylaxis in the most critical sectors of this region of the country have intensified, making it possible to maintain these figures.

Moreno stressed that the cooperation of the community, the citizens on alert and report the crime to time, has also had an impact on that agents of the police to act with greater speed and catches of criminals.

I would interpret this as the reporting of crimes is down 28%.

Any statistics on arrests, court appearances, or jail time served? Has anyone heard of any criminals involved in the cases we know about serving any time at all?

Those statistics only get information of the amount of reports of crime.  Thay is why a lot of panamanians dont trust on government statistics.  Some people dont report all crimes.  Also a few months ago the Minister of Security and President Varela were harshly criticized because the statistics they used to tell people that Panama's was safe and have the lowest crime rate in the region was Murders.

Absolutely agree.  I always think of the quote of Marion Barry, past mayor of Washington D.C., " Outside of the killings, D.C. has one of the lowest crime rates in the country". 

Barry was convicted on drug charges during his 3rd term as mayor and forced to leave office in 1991. He was re-elected mayor in 1995. Panama is not the only country with problems.
