The appeal will be presented to the Superior Court for Children and Adolescents by Julio Campines, Prosecutor of Family, Minors, and Adolescents in Bocas del Toro, who said that the person responsible was 17 years old at the time and he was tried under the criminal jurisdiction of adolescents, the crimes of homicide, robbery, and rape. Through the appeal, it is expected that the Criminal Judge for Adolescents consider imposing a different prison sentence, since three serious crimes t were committed by the convicted person, said the Prosecutor. The victim, a 25-year-old backpacker was found dead on February 5, 2017, in the village of Bastimento, on Isla Colón, at the intersection between the communities of Wizard and Red Frog. http://www.newsroompanama.com/news/panama/12-years-for-rape-and-murder-of-us-tourist
Brundageba
After 12 years in prison he will still be a fairly young adult and with all the professional criminal savvy learned from the hardened criminals he' s been in jail with. Boggles my mind.
TwoSailors
A while back a Panamanian lady got caught with drugs and she got 20 years. 12 years for murder? Makes no sense.
Keith Woolford
The Prosecution was asking for the maximum sentence and filed an immediate appeal. Technically the killer was a juvenile at the time but he committed the most serious of adult crimes.

Makes no sense. In what would seem to be more appropriate sentencing, these two mutts from the Dominican Republic got 50 years each today for the 2011 kidnapping and murder of 5 Chinese kids. If they ever get out of La Joya, they'll likely be deported. One of the convicts, Ventura Caballos has already escaped there once. I think it's unfortunate that the Supreme Court recently voted to close the prison on Isla Coco, Panama's Alcatraz. http://www.panamatoday.com/panama/punta-coco-panamanian-alcatraz-penitentiary-1703 http://laestrella.com.pa/panama/nacional/condenan-50-anos-asesinos-cinco-jovenes-chorreranos/24072228 Edited July 9, 2018 by Keith Woolford

Boggles my mind. The Public Ministry has successfully appealed the sentence of the minor responsible for the murder of this young woman. His sentence has been doubled from 12 to 24 years. https://www.prensa.com/provincias/Duplican-asesino-estadounidense-Bocas-Toro_0_5117488209.html Edited September 7, 2018 by Keith Woolford
