This was a fun show. Especially the motorcycles in the cage! Have video but too big to upload.

One suggestion would be to put the video on YouTube, and then post a link to that video clip here.

P.S., since we pay for this service we have to limit our costs for the servers and data storage costs. Hopefully our members can understand that we are not millionaires.

Please remember my friends This Is A Blog monitored by the owner/administration). And if THEY disapprove I will take it down.

Hil, your words are indeed correct. This is your blog. You are in control. Blog owners have greater leeway in what they post and whether they allow others to reply, etc. See Rule 22. What you have posted here is in full compliance with CL's rules.

We do appreciate your postings and are happy that you use CL. One of these days we would like to meet you in person. (And we owe you a huge thank you for helping us find a great Mexican restaurant in Volcan.)

    Keep up the good work.

  3. Hil,

As a blog owner here on CL, you have considerable control over your blog. I see that you have locked this blog entry. That is one of the tools available for blog owners to use to manage their blog. Admins can override such locks, as I am doing here, but it is very rare that I do so. Other tools include deleting content, which you have also discovered.

Speaking now specifically as an administrator of this website, you get to set the rules for your blog. Your desire not to turn your posting into marketing or a critique is reasonable, but even if it were not reasonable, you have that right and the tools to manage your blog. All CL users should respect your choices. The admins only step in when rules or guidelines are being violated, and you have never even gotten close to violating any of CL's rules or guidelines.

I am a bit concerned that my clarification of your reference to a website may have caused the diversion into critiquing and marketing. That was not my intention. I had an uneasy feeling after reading your original blog posting because you made reference to more information about that project but then did not elaborate; that is what caused my inquiry. Please know that I was not trying to hijack your posting and turn it into a marketing tool for the developers.

I have two purposes for posting this reply. One is to highlight ('advertise' might be a better word) the fact that blog owners have considerable control (much more so than postings in the forums channel) over their blog. And secondly to highlight that many people read and appreciate the information that you post in your blog entries.

Thank you for re-posting your information about your visit to Isla Boca Brava. And thank you for being a contributing CL member.

    Why is everything posting twice?????????

Things are not posting twice. CL has the ability to quote a prior posting so that it is abundantly clear, where appropriate, to indicate the words ibeing replied to.

Look for the "Quote" icon in the lower left of all postings. If you are logged in and click that link, then a new reply will be started and the posting that is being replied to will be reflected in that new reply, but inside of a "quoted text" box.

I used the quote functionality in this posting, and then removed the part of your posting that was not relevant.

You can, in fact, reply to multiple postings all at once. Rare, but sometimes handy. That would be the "+" icon.

  5. Bonnie,

Going a bit further, this blog owner asked in advance as to the acceptability of posting a link on CL to her personal blog. Because there is nothing to the contrary in our rules, my response was "sure, go ahead".

She explained that she is a writer. Her approach to publishing her writings is somewhat different to the more typical poster, but then variety is the spice of life. And there is a very nice posting on her personal blog about Mort's passing. I can appreciate that there is no need to repeat what she has already written. Rather, she has done our readers a favor by expanding and linking related topics from different sources.

The most significant thing for me in her blog postings (both CL and personal) is that Mort's passing was a huge loss to our community. We went to the services at the cemetery yesterday. Huge showing by our community.

Our hearts go out to Barbara and family.

  6. Due to an error, a duplicate blog entry with identical content inadvertently was created on 7 December 2015. In order to maintain the blog posting integrity, the error blog post was deleted, and the two replies associated with it are being "rescued". Because we have no technical means of merging blog posting or moving blog replies, I have no other option except to copy and paste those two replies here.

"For younger expats who are not ready to retire and who have children, a friend of mine summed up their reasons for leaving quite succinctly: "Friends of mine have left because of their kids as they felt this was not a great spot to receive a cutting edge education.Or they couldn't figure out a way to earn money here."

    "Yep. That's right.

"The Panamanian educational system is ranked 112 out of 144 countries (2013, Global Competitiveness Index, World Economic Forum). That's not too good. Not good at all. And if you want to make a living here, an entrepreneurial spirit and skill set is needed."

Well.   I would say that this is not totally correct.   I don't know how this ranking system works and what they really measure but I will tell you about real life facts.   It is probably that the education in Public or state owned schools are not the best one but another thing is private schools.   A great percentage of high school graduates from private school go to study at foreign universities, specially US and other countries in Europe and Latin America.

When I was in the early 20's I do remember that there were a lot of US EXpats living in Panama and they didn't want to have their kids in the Canal Zone school system and to our surprise they place them in some private schools in Panama.  I can recall two girls who where daughter of Colonel Stone (his wife wrote a famous book about Panama).  Both girls studied in a private catholic school in Panama and did so well when they return back to the US.

President Varela, president Martinelli, Minister Roberto Roy, Former Panama Canal Alberto Aleman Zubieta and a lot of Panamanian businessmen, politicians, professionals, etc studied high school in Panama and later went to US college to study doing well and without any kind of problem.  So that says a lot.   Even singer/songwriter/actor Ruben Blades studied a master degree at Harvard and he was student of a public school like the Instituto Nacional.

So.  I criticize what is happening in the public school system in Panama and we, Panamanians, tend to be so harsh with our criticism to our government and systems but I am so proud of those professionals that succeeded and represented the country very well outside Panama that came from our educational system.

I don't have children in the local education system. My Panamanian friend has two daughters, one a recent graduate of Boquete schools. She (notice a female) has just received a 4 (four) year full scholarship in Mechanical Engineering given by a foreign country. Proud of this young lady and makes me happy when this kind of thing occurs. Wishing her much success.

  7. Hil J,

As an administrator I edited your post, but it appears that my edit does not get flagged by the software in the Blogs channel like it does in the Forums channel.

The reason for the edit is that I had to read the first sentence multiple times in order to realize that you had misspelled the fourth word. What was posted was "I went to be (sic)...". I corrected the spelling to read "I went to bed...".

i hope you don't mind. If you do, I can change it back to the original.

  8. Hil,

    Thank you for sharing.

This website has been a labor of love, but worth the investment. We (my wife and I) believe this is the right thing to do -- being of benefit [our intention] to our friends and our adopted community. We know there will be some missteps, but with the understanding and support of the members, we, collectively, will improve the website and hopefully make life more enjoyable, and perhaps more productive. For us, life is more about what one puts into it, rather than what one gets out of it. And that understanding and support has been there (here?) in magnitudes beyond what we could dream of.

We recently spent three weeks in Maui doing the tedious, detailed planning and design of the website, and crafting of the guidelines, privacy policy, and terms and rules. There have been a few tweaks so far, but minor. We think we got it right for the most part. Your comments in this topic support that perception.

    And so again, thank you.

    Hasta pronto,

    Bud
