Tuesday, December 4 – Doctor Wong, Director of Hospital Cooperativo and members of the hospital staff will present information about the hospital and its medical discount plan. A native English-speaking translator will provide clear, understandable interpretation. Hospital Cooperativo is the only non-profit private hospital in Panama. There are around twenty doctors affiliated with the hospital plus psychologists and nutritionists. Recent additions include new consulting rooms, a new pharmacy location and a new outpatient surgery clinic. Insurance is rather expensive for seniors (if available at all), but this plan will allow low costs for most normal medical care, and the money saved by not paying insurance premiums can be set aside for larger expenses. It has already-low prices made even lower by annual membership in the discount plan for $120 per person per year Renewals for existing members and new sign-ups for the plan may be processed immediately after the meeting.

  16. On Sunday October 28, Amigos de Animales spayed or neutered 221 animals, 100 dogs and 121 cats, with four vets working. In addition to the usual spay/neuter, they were presented with some additional challenges which they met with their usual skill and professionalism. We never know who or what will be presented to us at any given clinic. What we do know is that every animal will be treated with care and compassion. This was the last clinic of the year bringing the total of the animals that went through our clinic to 1,759 and 14,994 since our start in 2005. That is a lot of animals! We have so many people to thank this year. First and foremost our vets: Dras. Chely and Amanda, and Drs. Tello, Cesar, Virgilio, Ricardo, Aaron, and Manuel all of whose dedication and hard work we gratefully appreciate and hope to see them all back with us next year. And thanks to our visiting vets, Dra Sandy and Dr Jeff who we wish we could see more of here in Boquete. Thank you! And where would we be without our volunteers? Our thanks to your being with us at the clinics and staying with us through the good times and the sometimes difficult. Over the years, we have lost some great volunteers but we always do seem to get new ones to join us and while our old friends cannot be replaced, we continue to have the best volunteers in the world! Many thanks to all for the care and attention you give to the animals who are entrusted to us at every clinic. A special thanks to Jane Hampton and Jane Vasarhelyi who keep our kitchen running so well and ensure that all the vets and volunteers are well fed and happy throughout the day. And thank you to all those who bring in the food. A special thanks to Heidi and Mike of Mike’s Global Grill who donate pizzas to every clinic and keep our vets going throughout the day. Thank you to the Mayor of Boquete and the entire community which has embraced our message of spay and neuter and recognized and encouraged us to continue our work in the community. Our next clinic will be Sunday January 27, 2019. COMING UP: We will be selling our 2019 calendars at the Tuesday Market, Mike’s and MBE. Thanksgiving at Animales will be on Thursday, November 22. Please bring a dish to share. Watch for the flyer for more information. There will be a general meeting on Monday December 3 at 1PM to discuss plans and ideas for fundraising in 2019 and beyond. Any and all suggestions will be welcomed. Thanks to you all for all you do!

No matter what religion you follow there is something in the Buddhist philosophy for everyone. Merl Will-Wallace has been an avid follower of Buddhist philosophy for over 20 years. Tuesday, September 11- This session will begin with a video on the energy arts. It was created by the most influential Tai Chi teacher in the United States, Bruce Frantzis. He rejected a full undergraduate scholarship at Harvard to study energy arts in Asia for 20 years . Tai Chi and Chi Gung are techhniques for using energy ("chi") to heal, reverse aging, prevent illness and defend oneself. They connect with the body/mind/ spirit and the basic energies of the universe. Their employment counterbalances the tension and stress of modern life and helps return us to our original state. After the video, Bill Witt will answer questions. He has 33 years experience (20 with a Grand Master) in Michigan and has studied with 6 masters in Canada, where he taught for 10 years. Bill taught for 2 years in Boquete, and will approach Tai Chi/Chi Gung from the perspective of these arts as moving meditations which keep the body flexible and healthy. Bill Whit, Phd is a retired Sociology professor. In 1987 he founded and was the first president of the Association for the Study of Food and Society. His book, William C. Whit, FOOD AND SOCIETY; A SOCIOLOGYICAL APPROACH) was published in 1995.
