Production of Alcoholic Beverages Up 8%

Between January and October 2017, 254 thousand liters of alcoholic beverages were produced in Panama, 8% more than was registered in production in the same period in 2016.

According to figures from the Comptroller General of the Republic, production of alcoholic beverages in the first ten months of 2017 increased 8% in year-on-year terms, rising from 235 thousand liters between January and October 2016, to 254 thousand liters in the same period in 2017.

In the period in question, beer production increased 7.5%, going from 226 thousand liters in 2016 to 243 thousand liters in 2017. In contrast to the behavior of beer, cognac and whiskey registered drops of 8% and 51%, respectively.

Vodka was the liquor with the largest registered production increase in the first ten months of 2017 compared to the same period in 2016, rising from 123 thousand liters in 2016 to 208 thousand liters in 2017, equivalent to growth of 68%.

According to figures from the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic, production of alcoholic beverages in 2017 grew 8% in year-on-year terms, rising from 285 million liters in 2016 to 308 million liters in 2017.

For the years in question beer production increased 7.8%, going from 275 million liters in 2016 to 296 million liters in 2017. 

In 2017, Gin was the liquor that recorded the largest increase in its production compared to 2016, rising from 1.6 million liters in 2016 to 1.9 million liters in 2017, equivalent to a growth of 19%.

Alcoholic Beverages Market in Central America

Between January and September 2016 Central American countries together imported $203 million worth of alcoholic beverages, 6% more than in the same period last year.

Imports 
In the first nine months of 2016 Central American countries as a whole imported alcoholic beverages worth $203 million, the largest buying country was Panama with $51 million, followed by Guatemala with $50 million and Costa Rica with $47 million.

Exports 
In the first three quarters of 2016 Central American countries as a whole exported alcoholic drinks worth $70 million, with the main selling country being Costa Rica with $18 million, followed by Guatemala with $17 million and Panama with $12 million. 

Variation of regional flow
Imports in the first nine months of the year compared to the same period previously grew from 2013 to 2016. Exports recorded no significant changes.

In the first five months of 2018, production of alcoholic beverages in Panama amounted to 128.7 million liters, 0.4% less than was registered in the same period in 2017.

According to the most recent figures from the Comptroller General of the Republic, production of alcoholic beverages in general remained almost unchanged, decreasing from 129.2 million liters in the first five months in 2017, to 128.7 million liters in the same period in 2018.

From January to May 2018, Gin was the spirit that recorded the largest increase in its production compared to the same period in 2017, rising from 781,000 liters to one million liters, equivalent to growth of 30%. 

For the periods in question, beer production decreased by 1%, falling from 124.3 million liters in 2017 to 123.7 million liters in 2018.

Alcohol Consumption in Central America

Panama is the country where the highest proportion of beer consumption was reported with respect to total alcohol consumed, with 77%, followed by Costa Rica and Guatemala, with 64% and 56%, respectively.

The Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health 2018, published by the World Health Organization (WHO), details statistics up to 2016 on consumption of alcoholic beverages in different countries.

According to the report, consumption of distilled beverages in Central American countries, which include rum, whiskey, vodka, brandy, cognac and some digestives, account for 59% of the total alcohol consumed in Nicaragua. In Honduras, the proportion was 52%, in El Salvador 51%, in Guatemala 42%, in Costa Rica 28% and in Panama 19%.

In regards to beer consumption, the document details that in Panama this accounts for 77% of the total demand for alcohol, in Costa Rica the percentage reaches 64%, in Guatemala 56%, in El Salvador 48%, in Honduras 47% and in Nicaragua 40%

The report highlights that in Costa Rica 7% of alcoholic beverages consumed are wines, in Panama the proportion for this drink is 4%, in Guatemala 2%, and in El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras it is 1%.

From January to September 2018, Central American companies imported $269 million in alcoholic beverages, 23% more than in the same period in 2017, mainly because of purchases from Mexico.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
From January to September 2018, the main buyer of alcoholic beverages in Central America continued to be Guatemala, with $68 million, followed by Panama, with $65 million, Costa Rica, with $53 million, Honduras, with $45 million, El Salvador, with $29 million and Nicaragua, with $7 million.

Regional business upwards
Between the first nine months of 2017 and the same period in 2018, the value imported into the region increased 23%, from $218 million to $269 million.

For the periods concerned, imports from Mexico increased 42%, while purchases from U.S. companies increased from $48 million to $68 million.

Main suppliers
From January to September last year, 25% of the value imported into the region was from Mexico, 20% from the U.S., 8% from the United Kingdom and 6% from Chile.

Mexico is the market origin of imports that has grown the most for the months concerned in the last six years, since in 2013 represented 11% of total regional purchases and in 2018 reached 25%.

Alcoholic Beverages: Production in Panama Doesn't Improve

From January to July 2019, the production of alcoholic beverages in the country was 166 million liters, 4% less than that recorded in the same period of 2018.

The most recent data published by the General Comptroller of the Republic, specify that the production of alcoholic beverages generally reported a decline, reducing from 172.9 million liters from January to July 2018, to 166.8 million liters in the same period of 2019.

In the first seven months of 2019, Whiskey registered a decrease in its production compared to the same period in 2018, falling from 9,696 liters to 9,048 liters, reporting a 7% decline.

During January 2020, the production of alcoholic beverages in Panama was 26.6 million liters, 13% more than the same period in 2019.

The most recent data published by the General Comptroller of the Republic, states that the production of alcoholic beverages in general reported 3.1 million liters, going from 23.5 million liters in January 2019, to 26.6 million liters in the same month of 2020.

For the periods in question, vodka registered a decrease in production, dropping from 16,763 liters to 2,250 liters, reporting an 87% decrease. In the case of Geneva, the drop was 20%.

For the months in question, beer production increased by 14%, going from 22.3 million liters in 2019 to 25.4 million liters in 2020.

Alcoholic Beverage Consumption Forecasts

During the next few months, it is estimated that whisky sales in the Panamanian market will decrease by around 2%, compared to the levels reported before the crisis.

The "System for monitoring the markets and economic situation in Central American countries", developed by CentralAmericaData, forecasts the variations that the demand of households for different goods and services will suffer in this new commercial reality, through a model of sensibility of demand-income.

This analysis is based on the assumption that the measures restricting mobility in the country were extended for three months.

According to the interactive report, in these new market conditions, it is estimated that in the coming months, beer demand will decrease by 3% when compared to the levels registered in the first two months of 2020.

In the cases of the white, rosé and red table wine markets, it is predicted that in the new commercial reality, sales will fall between 2% and 3%.

When analyzing the system for monitoring markets, it is predicted that sales of aged, blue and white tequila will contract by approximately 2%.
