These kind of assassinations are almost always a result of a deal gone bad in the criminal underworld.

 I do agree.

Clearly it was a hit ordered to this specific man by somebody who has some deal gone bad.

It now appears that the U.S. citizen who was shot and killed in this assault was a victim of collateral damage.

The two injured men who are hospitalized under Police guard, now identified as being from Serbia and Kosovo, appear to have been the intended targets. At least one has an outstanding Interpol Alert.

Investigations indicate that the North American didn’t know the other victims, by misfortune he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

collateral damage

What's the origin of the phrase 'Collateral Damage'?

'Collateral damage' is a euphemism adopted by the US military in the mid 20th century. The word collateral derives from the Latin word 'collateralis', which means 'together with'. So, when an intended target is struck and damage or death is caused nearby, that damage is 'collateral'. Only the US military, with their reputation of obfuscation, could translate 'innocent people were killed' into 'damage was caused nearby'.
