300 corridor users hit with fines in October

With user debt standing at over $3 million The National Highway Company (ENA) , and the Transportation Authority handed out more than 300 tickets in the North, South and East corridors during October.

An ENA report revealed  that 60% of the sanctioned drivers circulated without a balance, and the remaining 40% presented irregularities such as: cars without license plates, without insurance coverage and others with expired licenses..

The institution also confirmed that the users' debt currently amounts to more than $3 million generated by less than 5% of the 550,000 highway users.

Neighbors rescue 7 crash victims waiting 30 mins for ambulances

Seven people, including three schoolteachers traveling in one vehicle, were hospitalized with severe injuries after a head-on crash on the Transistmica at Lajas de Las Cumbres, in North Panama on Wednesday night November 27.

Local residents struggled to extract the injured from the wreckage as ambulance services took 30 minutes to respond.

Excessive speed by one of the vehicles is presumed to be the cause of the severity of the damage.

Five ambulances of Sume 911 the emergency service of and other dependencies transferred the victims to the San Miguel Arcángel  and other hospitals.

A triple vehicle crash in Chiriqui

Three people lost their lives and 11 were injured in traffic  incidents on Saturday, November 30

Isabel Del Carmen Payán de Lawson, 52, was killed in a triple collision in Tierras Altas, Chiriquí, at 5 a.m.

Police sources that the car driven by the victim slammed into the back of another vehicle and crossed the road into the path of an ongoing truck that was overturned.

Nine people were in injured in the incident.

According to National Police, there have been 43 deaths from road accidents,  in Chiriqui so far this year, 18 fewer victims compared to the same date in 2018.

Nurse killed 
A nurse  on her way to work on the morning shift at  the Manuel Amador  Hospital in Colon  died and two others were injured when their taxi was hit by a tour bus

The day’s carnage ended at 11 p.m. with the death of a pedestrian hit by a delivery truck on the Transistmica highway in Panama

3 Highway deaths, 6,543 tickets on Mothers’ Day weekend

At least three people died on the Mothers’ Day long weekend and police handed out  6,543 traffic tickets With extra police on duty as hundreds of travelers returned to the capital on Monday, December 9, after spending time in the interior that figure is sure to rise.

Franklin Serrano, of the Traffic Police  Commissioner, said the entity launched operations to make the return safe. Around 150 units were deployed from San Carlos to La Espiga de La Chorrera. He said that the ticketing total included 173 impaired drivers who had their licenses removed and their cars towed. while 2,453 were booked for speeding

Police Captain killed, 8 injured by  impaired driver

A member of National Aeronaval Service (Senan)  who failed a breathalyzer test and attempted to flee the scene of a triple vehicle accident that killed a National Police captain and sent eight people to hospital will “not be allowed” to damage the name of the service.

The agent  Miguel Ángel Ortega was traveling, with a woman and her daughter. n the Pan-American Highway, between the El Caño and Santa Lucía communities, in Cocle province on Saturday night January 18  when he lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with a sedan driven by  Captain, Héctor Sánchez,33  a member of the Superior Police Institute (ISPOL) of Veraguas.

Sanchez died from the collision, while the woman and her daughter suffered fractures. The younger woman was transferred to a hospital in the City of Chitré to undergo surgery.

The Senan issued a statement saying that actions are being coordinated with the Public Ministry and the National Police.

"The National Aeronaval Service reaffirms that it will not allow its members to affect the good name of  the institution.”

A agent of the National Aeronaval Service (Senan) presumed responsible for the traffic accident that killed a National Police captain will remain in detention for six months in while the Public Prosecutor's Office continues investigations this fact. The accident that claimed the captain's life left the defendant and seven others with injuries including a 30-year-old woman in a delicate condition, happened last Saturday night, in the community of El Caño de Natá in the province of Coclé. The victim worked in the province of Veraguas and was buried at a ceremony attended by President Cortizo on  Wednesday  January 23, the day preventive detention was confirmed

Two  dead one seriously hurt in highway crash

A  12-year-old child- and an adult were killed and a third person seriously injured when their sedan was hit by a speeding truck on the Inter-America highway in Gorgona, Chame district  on Saturday morning, January 25. The accident caused a massive traffic jam as the injured person was extracted from the wreckage and transferred to the hospital in La Chorrera.

Manslaughter charges for truck driver in two-death crash

The driver of a speeding truck that crossed the highway in Chame and demolished a sedan, killing two passengers a 12-year-old and an adult , and seriously injuring the driver on Saturday, Jan. 25 has been charged with manslaughter and is in preventive detention. The severely injured driver of the car was trapped in the wreckage and had ro be pried out by Fire Service personnel using the “jaws of life."

6 weekend  deaths raise Jan. highway toll   to 27

Six highway deaths on the weekend brought the total for the year to date to   27  according to Panama Transit Police and there have been numerous injuries including a dozen passengers when two busitos collided head-on in Veracruz. 

Weekend deaths occurred in Panama Oeste (Chame and San Carlos and Los

Speed, alcohol and reckless driving were the main contributing factors."

Among the fatalities were retired school principal Blasio Morón Alonso, 84  and his wife Blasina Degracia Frías, 87 , who descended from a bus on Sunday night , in the district of Chame, and were hit by the driver of a speeding van, while trying to cross the Interamerican highway instead of using the pedestrian bridge, due to their physical limitations to climb the stairs. One of them used a cane,

Local residents claim that passing traffic rarely obeys the posted 60 km speed limit.

Speed kills pickup driver. injures four

The driver of a speeding pickup truck was killed on Saturday morning   February 1  when he slammed into a pole on Via Tocumen At the entry of the Felipillo sector of the December 24 district. The accident left several people injured, who were taken to a nearby hospital.

One person was killed and  five injured in a head-on crash between a sedan and a van at dawn on Sunday, February 16  on the Boyd Roosevelt road in Buena Vista Colon

A 63-year old man was killed by a hit and run driver in Los Santos on Sunday morning.

Two pedestrians died on Saturday after being hit by speeding vehicles.

Police officer first Carnival victim

The first fatal victim during Panama’s 2020 Carnival celebrations was an on-duty a police officer returning from a  call who was involved in a head-on collision in Tanara, Chepo on Friday night, February 21.

On   Saturday,  morning at least 70,000 drivers of headed towards the interior of the country, on the occasion of the carnivals and by early afternoon prehospital Emergency Management System (SUME 911) had treated about 629 emergencies including  88 traffic accidents, and police handed out scores of tickets for traffic violations.

One dead 15 injured in rear-ended bus

One  passenger  was killed and 15  injured when a bus was rear-ended on the Interamerican Highway, in  Los Canelos de Santa Maríam Herrea  on Sunday morning March 1

 The  bus on the Aguadulce – Santiago route was leaving  Los Canelos school stop when it was hit by a truck and pushed into the school grounds,

The dead passenger was trapped inside the bus. Four of the injured suffered fractures.

One  person was killed and two injured in  Las Margaritas in the Chepo district east of Panama city when the driver of a speeding Brinks armored truck lost control and plunged into a gully near the bridge over the Mamoni River.  on Monday morning, March 2.

The truck was carrying at last $130,000.

The night before  one person died and three were injured when two vans and a pickup collided on the Inter-American highway in Atalaya, Veraguas.

Speeding taxi makes student late for school

A speeding taxi driver taking a girl student to school on Wednesday morning, March 4. lost control of the car in La Cabima. and the vehicle overturned in a ravine.  The man was unharmed, while the girl had minor injuries.

One person was killed and three seriously injured in a triple vehicle crash  at in Hato Montaña  at 7.50  am on Thursday, April  30. One vehicle overturned. Quarantine restrictions have dramatically reduced the  highway death toll in the last two months, but with fewer cars on the road many wannabe  Formula 1 drivers without the right vehicle or skill are pressing  hard on the gas

Whoa baby.   Now that I am no longer the side kick of the husband behind the wheel ( he blessed the day that happened BTW)   my dear husband with limited peripheral awareness may never see "it" coming.  Lord help him ................me tooo!~   Imagine the speed with this crash.  One car is a block away.....

With fewer vehicles on the road because of lockdown, these “cowboy” drivers are speeding, so probably more deaths will occur in these crashes.
