Gotta wonder why so many accidents end with the vehicle up side down on the roof.  How does this happen?

On our way to David last week we noticed police located “in unexpected locations” all with radar equipment. A white pick-up roared past us as we remarked to each other: “boy, is he speeding”. Yup, around the next curve the officer had radar in hand and the pick-up was stopped. Assume that driver was given a big ticket.

Glad the police are taking this action.

Three Chiriqui road deaths as speed and alcohol reign

crash-620x264.jpg
The speeding pickup
Post Views: 165

THREE people were run over and killed in three successive days in Chiriqui last week bringing the province’s death toll so far this year to  27, up from 13   in the same period last year with drunk drivers playing an increasing role in the slaughter.

The  Chiriqui deaths znd two others, one in Capira and another in Colon raise the national casualty figure to 224 while hundreds more with serious injuries are putting additional strain on the country’s overstretched hospitals.

Roberto Armando Becker, 35, , died early Sunday, August 19 after being hit by a pickup,  while using a marked crossing near the women’s prison in Dolega. on the road from David to Boquete

Commissioner Elmer Castillo, head of the Subdirectorate of Traffic Operations (SDOT), said that everything seems to indicate that there was excessive speed because there is a marked pedestrian crossing on the pavement.

“This makes our work seem in vain. Yesterday 29  speeding tickets were issued on this stretch of road. We had breathalyzer devices at this point, in the Caldera checkpoint, and in Dolega to Potrerillos, as it was the patronal feast and 34 drivers were charged with impaired driving” said Castillo.

Panamanian Parliament to debate bill that tightens sanctions against drunk drivers

Wed, 08/22/2018 - 16:03

Normal (28).jpg

The Panamanian Parliament will discuss a bill introduced by a group of citizens seeking to tighten sanctions against drivers who have caused a fatal accident by driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or using cell phones.

The National Assembly, of 71 deputies, announced on Tuesday on social networks that the Government Commission proposed bill 9, introduced by several citizens last May, days after a fatal controversial traffic accident in the country.

The bill seeks, among other issues, to tighten sanctions against drivers involved in fatal crashes with 5 to 8 years in prison and fines of up to $ 5,000.

The bill also obliges the authorities to conduct drug and alcohol tests immediately after the accident is registered.

At the beginning of last May, a 28-year-old woman died in a traffic accident registered in one of the bridges that cross the Panama Canal, which caused great astonishment in the country because the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
