The driver of the Prado that killed a 28-year-old mother and severely injured her four-year-daughter following a head-on collision on the Bridge of the Americas on Saturday, May 5  is under police watch in a private hospital.

An arrest warrant was issued following impaired driving tests.  The Public Ministry reported that the order was made by the Homicide Section of the Metropolitan Area, under prosecutor Rafael Baloyes, who has appealed for any witnesses to call his office.

The man, suspected of impaired driving was heading into town on Saturday evening when he veered into the oncoming lane, hitting a sedan whose driver died on the spot. Her daughter is in Hospital del Nino.

Civil organizations linked to road safety are calling for tougher penalties for impaired drivers and for the next government to create a comprehensive strategy to reduce Panama’s road carnage.

Over  440 people died on the country’s highways last year, and hundreds more were hospitalized, with inattention (use of cell phones ) and alcohol leading causes.

Bridge death driver in previous drunk driving accident

The man involved in the death of a woman on the Bridge of the Americas, while impaired, will remain in preventive detention after it was revealed to The Panama West Court of Appeals that he had been involved in another drunk driving incident in March that injured four people.

Alex Gómez Sousa-Lennox, appeared at the hearing in La Chorrera, after the judge of Guarantees, Carlos Fajardo, ordered his provisional arrest for six months, while investigators determined if there were procedural risks such as flight risk, destruction of evidence and danger for the community.

It was shown that the bridge incident, which resulted in the death of Ana Karen Pérez, 28,  and sent her four-year-old orphaned daughter to the Hospital del Nino,  was the second case in which Alex Gómez Sousa-Lennox was involved. The court heard that he was involved in an accident in San Carlos on March 6, in which four people were injured and according to information in the file, He was also intoxicated.

His lawyers were against the precautionary measure imposed by the prosecution, but their arguments were not convincing enough for the Court of Appeals, which endorsed the measure of provisional detention, reports TVN.

Sousa-Lennox arrived in court in a wheelchair and wearing an orthopedic collar. Prosecutor Anabelis Jaén, said:  “We will sustain that the procedural risks still remain, for which the precautionary measure was imposed last Wednesday “.

Caution heading down to David this morning. There is a serious rollover near the bridge at the Rio Majagua.

I can see from the photo that at least one tire is a completely different size from the others which appear to be bald.

A medical emergency supervisor who spent nine years with the Unified Emergency Management System (Sume 911)., pulling bodies and injured people from mangled vehicles became Panama’s  143rd  traffic fatality of the year on Friday, June 1.

Luis “Villa” Antonio Guerra  47, was driving his taxi  on the way to his home to pick up the  family for  a trip to his Chiriqui when he was killed at 8.15 a.m.  on the road leading  to the Port of Vacamonte, Arraiján, in  the province of Panama West near  a newly activated Sume 911 unit.

The engine of the taxi was torn out and   Guerra, like so many he had attended to as a paramedic, was trapped in  the wreckage,

His rescue colleagues were at the scene in minutes but the operations supervisor (and instructor)  was already dead.

Members of the Fire Department freed his body.

Gil Fábrega, Executive Director of Sume 911, went to the accident site  and praised Guerra as ” a life-saving hero, with a gift for communicating with and  helping people whose lives were in danger in the midst of a tragedy”

Officials of the National Traffic Operations Directorate (DNOT) and officials of the Public Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the two trucks involved in the incident which led to an hours-long traffic jam.

Yesterday on the way down to David there was an accident in the vicinity of the Chiriqui Storage/Flea market area.  It was on the west side of the road.  Vehicles were a  government truck and a white car.  They  were both over the ditch  on the right side of the road well into the field.    The car was so far into the field it was difficult to believe  that after impact, a vehicle could travel that far.    I'd say it was over 100 ft  and spun around facing the opposite direction and on the other side of a cow pasture.   Speed.  One more government vehicle out of commission.

Light justice for drunk truck driver in paramedic death

Post Views: 128

The sister of a paramedic who was killed by a drunk driver behind the wheel of a truck on June 1  is protesting the light precautionary measures  applied to the driver while the victim’s children are receiving psychological counseling on Father’s  Day

“We do not understand how our brother’s case, where a drunk  person driving a heavy equipment (truck), with an inadequate license, could not be given  a stronger precautionary measure,” said Noris Villarreal  who traveled from Chiriqui to Panama on the eve of Fathers day air her concerns on TV.

Luis Antonio Villarreal, 911 Emergency Technician of 911 died in a traffic accident on the road to the port of Vacamonte, in West Panama, when he was heading home to take  his family to travel to Chiriqui, his homeland.

The paramedic was driving a taxi when a truck hit him from behind and killed him. The driver of the truck , according to Transit Police, was drunk.

“This person is in his house and he only has to go to sign periodically, he was forbidden to leave the province and his license was withdrawn. That does not mean he’s not going to take a car, go for drinks and kill someone, “she said.

She  complained that why in the case of the woman who died on May 5 in a collision on  the Bridge of the Americas in which the  daughter was injured a drunk driver was also involved, he was given a much stronger  precautionary measure (detention)

With the measure,  against the man who killed her brother she said , a bad message is being sent: “The message is that I can drink, I get in a car, I get drunk, I hit and kill someone and and I go home.”

She said that the laws should be toughened so that people are afraid to drive while intoxicated.

She  added that Luis  the father of two saved many lives. His children and family are receiving psychological counselling.
