Roadway Carnage, Traffic Accidents, and Death Toll [An Ongoing Saga As Occurring]

Recommended Posts

That would imply that the roads and drivers are better in Panama, which defies common sense. Maybe if I could figure out how many vehicles per capita are on the roads...

The population of Panama is about the same as Houston, Texas. How many vehicle accidents per day there? I dunno. A bunch.

AT LEAST  15 people were injured and taken to hospital following the latest public transit accident on   Wednesday, afternoon, February 28.

A bus on the Santiago-Chitré route overturned on the bridge over the Conaca river on the Divisa-Santiago. section of the Trans -America Highway

Firefighters were called in to free the passengers and reported that eight of the injured were in stable condition, but some of the others were seriously hurt.

The accident caused a major traffic jam as firefighters and paramedics attended to the injured.

What would interest me most in the way of comparative statistics is the number of accidents vs. number of drivers, and at a secondary level the number of accidents per vehicle-mile. There are issues in comparing accuracy of the various numbers, and then there is the question of the severity of accidents, i.e. injuries/fatalities vs. fender-benders.

It is my sense, gathered from motoring around Chiriqui, that Panamanian drivers would benefit from more education in defensive driving,  and would enhance their safety by improving their situational awareness instinct. Perhaps both will happen over time.

There was an accident in front of my house last Monday. Would anybody be surprised if I said it involved a taxi that was going way too fast and attempted to pass another car on the right? Of course 10 taxi drivers stopped to help and I'm sure most of them were solicited to be witnesses. Very lucky that nobody was hurt. There were a mom and baby passengers in the taxi and it's a miracle they didn't go through the windshield.

Just curious. Does Panama have driver's education in the high schools?  Learners permit?  By law, what are the instructional requirements to pass in order to get your drivers license for the first time?

I know the eye, a hearing test is required but what drivers training is needed?

Who pays the hospital, medical, and funeral costs associated with these horrible car crashes?

Speeding “Loco” driver  hits bus, demolishes car

SPEEDING driver survived
Post Views: 227

A Sedan car traveling at high speed on the Transistmica highway was demolished after hitting a parked Metro bus and sending the car’s two occupants to hospital, one in critical condition, at 12.45 a.m. on Sunday, March 11.

Numerous witnesses  in other vehicles  described the passage of the car, heading towards the city as “loco” (crazy) as it weaved through traffic  and overtook  other vehicles on Avenida 12 de Octubre, and on the Simón Bolívar highway before the driver lost control  and hit the bus parked at the school stop Artes y Oficios,

Units of the Fire  Department and Paramedic Corps freed the trapped driver and the passenger who were  taken to Santo Tomas Hospital (HST). The bus driver received only minor injuries.

A source  told El Siglo that the driver of the sedan  was apparently under the influence of alcohol.

Panama records over 120 traffic accidents each day. 55 people have been killed  and hundreds injured so far this year

Yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, March 13) we were headed to David when Police suddenly appeared near the Federal Mall construction site and directed all traffic to turn around. No alternate route was indicated. No explanation given. Just a lot of hand waving for urgency to quickly leave the area.

Some drivers tried to ask reason or new route, but no opportunity for conversation.

We wondered if there was a protest in David. Maybe the traffic accident listed in the above article was the reason?

No problem on the return to Boquete.

Moderator comment: There is a topic related to Guillermo Ferrufino (mentioned in this reply and a few subsequent postings, and his alleged corrupt practices. For additional details see http://www.chiriqui.life/topic/7445-guillermo-ferrufino-former-minister-of-social-development-charged-with-unjustified-personal-enrichment.[Comment added 28 February 2019.]

Fairgoers take note.

Police at the Caldera checkpoint are looking for folks returning from David who've had a few too many.

Busted for drinking and driving on the way home last night was former Social Development Minister Guillermo Ferrufino. He was also driving with an expired license.

He is still facing money laundering charges from acts of corruption committed during the previous government.

He was the one of the guys who cried when he was busted, not from guilt or remorse, but because he got caught and knew he was going to jail.

Ex Social Development Minister Guillermo Ferrufino  under country arrest while awaiting trial for alleged  money laundering  was booked for impaired driving and driving with an expired rove drunk and with an expired license at dawn on  Sunday, the March 18  in Caldera, at the entrance to the Boquete district in  Chiriqui,
Guillermo-Ferrufino_LPRIMA20150225_0178_23-300x169.jpg

Ferrufino became tearful at an earlier hearing

Ferrufino had to stop at a checkpoint  Where the agents of the National Police verified that he was driving with an expired license. A breathalyzer test showed that he was driving with 65 micrograms per deciliter when the maximum allowed is 28.

According to the level of drunkenness reports La Prensa from 5-24 (micrograms per deciliter) a warning is given; 25-40 gets a  $150; ticket: 41 or more is proven drunkenness, with a $ 150 fine, and car towed and retained.

Ferrufino’s vehicle was confiscated and he had to leave with relatives.

Ferrufino, who once had presidential ambitions but was told by then-president  Ricardo Martinelli to lower his sights to the Panama mayoralty,  has the precautionary measure of country jail after spending time in preventive detention

On February 27 the Second Superior Court of Justice did not grant an appeal filed by the defense of Ferrufino and Marta Herrera,  against the decision of the Second Court, which maintained the Money Laundering process against   Ferrufino and Herrera for money laundering.

Keith,  the position of car resting on a concrete road divider is almost too silly.I hope no one was seriously hurt, but don’t understand how this kind of accident happens.

Seems we need to give a special watch for “flying” cars. Throw these small — often white— vehicles into the mix with “yellow screamers” and we hope no one is color blind. :o

When I was [much] younger and growing up in Texas, we had an expression: A “STOP” sign means Slight Tap On Pedal:D

Maybe “ALTO” means A Little Tap Only:D :D

Today I stayed in our car with Anouk while Bud was inside the store. During a short period of time I counted 26 cars approaching a stop sign leading to the major downtown street. Busy Saturday I guess; 22 of the vehicles did not stop and some of the drivers only looked in one direction before crossing or turning into the roadway.

Expecting the unexpected can only prepare a person for so many circumstances.

This insane crash occurred down the highway this afternoon in front of the basketball court in El Frances.

It appears that another Bomberos vehicle was responsible.
