Moderators Moderator_02 Posted September 22, 2017 Moderators Share Posted September 22, 2017 Quote Pirate buses blindside law, boost road carnage Posted on September 21, 2017 in Panama, Your Man in Panama Post Views: 232A SPEEDING pirate bus, reportedly racing another crashed and overturned in Tocumen sending 16 people to hospital on Thursday, July 21. The incident came only 10 days after a similar crash which killed a 37-year old woman passenger and left a 19- year-old university student in a coma fighting for her life with a punctured lung. Statistics on pirate bus crashes are hard to come by as the Transit Authority (ATTT) regards them as private transport, but TVN Noticias has compiled some worrying figures as authorities turn a blind eye to the untrained and often inexperienced drivers ferrying 100,000 vulnerable lower-income workers a day. In the last four years, 10 people have died in 20 “accidents” involving the minibus fleets whose owners are largely cloaked in secrecy, but believed by many to include, like the former fleets of diablos rojos, members of the National Assembly who have never been averse to earning extra dollars to pad their near $10,000 a month stipends. The deadliest accident, according to TVN was in February 2016, when three people died in a frontal collision between a pirate and a freight car, after an apparent excess of speed on the highway to the town of Veracruz. The same year a driver who crashed his bus into a home in Villa Luchin, Tocumen was killed. An ATTT spokesman said they don’t keep track of “private transport injuries although the operators of the illegal system move over 100,000 people a day, according to experts. TVN combed reports of traffic accidents involving pirate buses and 162 injured or seriously injured 75 of them last year when they traveled as passengers on buses on The Arraiján-La Chorrera, highway Tocumen, Loma Cová and the North Corridor. So far this year, 58 people have been injured in pirate bus accidents. Last year, an investigation by La Estrella de Panamá revealed that in the city there were 22 illegal bus routes. Earlier this year TVN found over 30 in front of “the impassive look of the authorities” Pirate buses are making a killing, in more ways than one. http://www.newsroompanama.com/columns/your-man-in-panama/pirate-buses-blindside-law-boost-road-carnage

Dennis Philpot
I'm surprised there aren't more serious crashes here in Boquete, on the main road into town. My first walk at just before 6am each morning goes from the Haven, where I currently live, down to the main road by Superiores, then left to the direction of town, then left at La Karreta to the side road and back to the Haven. It's only about 25 minutes, with 10-15 minutes on the main road. And at this early hour I see lots of vehicles leaving and entering town at speeds of at least 60 mph and up to 80+mph (personal estimates). And to make it more exciting, many of them pass other cars that are going fast as well. I've been honked at from behind from one car passing another into town when I have to step off the "sidewalk" in those places where the "sidewalk" is gone. I know I, as a pedestrian I have no rights and need to look after myself. And I've learned to live with that reality. But the other seeming anomalies are that I see police on motorcycles and in vehicles driving at safe and normal speeds, but being passed by speeders without said police responding to give citations; and that many or most of the highest speeders are the Colegials taking kids to school (hopefully). Maybe it will take a major crash with kids hurt to incite the local police to enforce safety guidelines (if they exist). And this brings up one of the only advantages to traffic jams due to whatever circumstances: driving is slow, even if the "me first, before you" attitude is still extant. In the meantime I hope we can all get used to always giving a right of way and not reacting to perceived slights to our egos. 1

Brundageba
Horrible road planning in that entire area. Side streets have become major thoroughfares and are very narrow with very deep pot holes. Cars and trucks are driving on both sides of the road on the side street headed west like dodge-um derby. Anybody have some helpful hints on how to circumvent that the best way possible? Edited October 5, 2017 by Brundageba

There appear to be properties like KFC which need to be expropriated before that can happen. In the meantime, a traffic light would really help at the intersection where the accident occurred. Drivers are trying to turn left there, in every direction, 24/7. Edited October 5, 2017 by Keith Woolford
