As a point of reference, Ontario Canada with a population of 13.6 million recorded 295 deaths in 2015, with a decade long drop in fatal accidents. In the pirate bus incident, a woman passenger was killed and 13 people were injured, eight seriously. The pirate “busitos” follow the tradition of the diablos rojos, racing each. to be first at the gathering points for passengers waiting to put their lives in the hands of whoever happens to be behind the wheel. The accident happened at 9:30 p.m. opposite the Princesa de Gales shopping center, on the Transísmica route, towards Las Cumbres when the speeding driver lost control on a rain soaked road, hit a post and spun around before overturning. A similar incident killed a pirate bus passenger in San Miguelito on May 8. After an initial flurry of meetings and pronouncements promising control of the pirate, including linking them to the public transit system, nothing practical emerged. Many of the busitos, like the diablos rojos belong to elected deputies or those close to them. http://www.newsroompanama.com/news/panama/pirate-bus-kills-one-injures-

Palo Alto Jo
I've been watching this topic and comments for a week now. My husband isn't going to like my view on this, as I think he's a speed demon. He calls me a creeping old grandma. But, I'm just saying most of the accidents I see here involve speed. The corners here are not engineered to even be safe for the posted speed. I love that in Boquete, it is so crowded now, that if you have a wreck in town you might, just might, break a fingernail. I wish the car inspections here included brakes, taillights, and headlights. But, for the most part one needs to not speed and be defensively driving, to avoid being in one of these fatalities. Slow down, these roads were not built for speed.

Quote 3 dead in recorded traffic horror Posted on September 13, 2017 in Panama Post Views: 212 THREE PEOPLE were killed and one injured in a head on-collision between a pickup and a speeding taxi in Chepo on Tuesday, August 12, pushing the death toll on Panama highways this year to 303. The tragedy took place in front of people waiting for a bus near the La Tosca Minisuper in Las Margaritas, and was recorded on the store’s surveillance cameras. After the crash the taxi spun around several times, ejecting two passengers and burst into flames. Witnesses used fire extinguishers to douse the fire and attempted to rescue one of the passengers, but he died on the spot. According to preliminary information from the National Traffic Operations Directorate (DNOT), the driver of the pickup was attempting to make a left turn. He is in the Chepo District Hospital in serious but stable condition. The DNOT says that 88 of the deaths this year have resulted from collisions, 89 from people being run over, and 23 from hit and run incidents. Multi vehicle crash On Wednesday morning Three people including two university students were badly injured in a multivehicle crash on the Chitré Circunvalación road, in front of the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) offices. The collision involved a mule truck and two sedans, including a Mustang. The causes of the accident are under investigation, but speed is believed to have been one of the factors.
