Panama and Costa Rica Agree to Integrated Border Control

the Governments of Costa Rica and Panama signed today, after a bilateral meeting, an agreement for the creation of an integrated control.

The announcement was made in the framework of the Summit of Heads of State of the Central American Integration System (SICA) in which the president of Costa Rica, Luis Guillermo Solis, and his counterpart from Panama, Juan Carlos Varela, were witnesses of honor of the convention.

The agreement aims to establish general rules governing the operation of a control integrated in the border of the two countries, in order to avoid duplication of procedures and records for the flow of people, baggage, goods, vehicles and transport units.

The model will be implemented is called "Integrated Control Center" and which will be based on the development of non-intrusive technology, pointed to the authorities.

"Costa Rica and Panama have a strong relationship with an excellent coordination and collaboration to define common strategies," said Varela, at the close of the Summit of SICA.

The Panamanian President also highlighted the signing of the agreement and stressed the importance of the frontier bridge over the Sixaola river to facilitate tourism.

Solis and Varela agreed that both countries have a "very strong" and coordinated, which has enabled them to solve problems such as irregular flows of thousands of Cubans and Haitians in recent years.

The agreement was negotiated by the technical teams of both countries with the assistance of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
