Family of the month - May 2017

Meet Regina and Her Family

854bad1aa9324bd7b5054969888d5eae

Regina knows how to take care of her six children. When her husband died, she knew that she would have to be very careful with her meager income and the food provisions from BVB to make this work. She also knew that it would take some self-sacrifice and creativity to realize her ultimate goal of getting each of these children educated. The owners of the Boquete farm where Regina and her children live have honored the memory of her husband by allowing her to live in this two-bedroom wooden house rent free until the last child has graduated. However, to protect the integrity of their crops, they don‘t allow her to raise produce on the property, only chickens, her primary source of protein for her family. Regina works three days a week for $8 a day to make $96 a month. But she pays $80 in transportation costs to get her children to school and $12 a month for utilities each month, leaving nothing for food or clothes. So she and her fifteen year old daughter, Estafani, with the donation of a sewing machine, some cotton fabric, and an ironing board and an iron, are starting up their own little cottage industry: they make traditional Ngobe dresses and sell them to friends and family in their community. This wise and dedicated woman is raising happy, healthy, well-adjusted kids who know she is showing them something truly valuable. Only four of the six children are pictured here because two elementary school students were still in class.
