On Friday March 31 thousands of early subway users had to revert to buses and taxis to get to work 31 due to lack of trains after maintenance work during the night triggered a security system, and only four trains were able to operate. On, Wednesday, Apr 5, a braking problem on one of the trains led to another temporary shut down. On Thursday , early morning travelers were again frustrated when technical problems prevented the start of the service at 5:00 am. The problems stemmed from the update of the system for the arrival of the six new trains at the end of the month. Luis Carlos Diaz, engineer in charge of the operations of the Metro of Panama, said that when the operation schedule was finished at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday, “we proceeded to restart the servers to load the new version of the system, but at approximately 2: 00 a.m. a problem appeared in the system and the and the engineers contacted the company in France that provides the system France to eliminate the fault” Which was achieved at 5:00 a. m. the official start time for Metro Panama. Services began at 6:00 a.m., making thousands of users once again late for work or school. According to Roy, in a statement posted on his Twitter account, the alleged cost overruns of $553.9 million referred to in the investigation "do not exist and this amount corresponds to additional works on line 1 of the Metro "The mentioned amount corresponds exclusively to additional works of Line 1, such as adaptation to the floors and civil works of patio and workshops; three new stations of La Lotería, El Ingenio and San Isidro; Extending the viaduct and railway systems to San Isidro; expansion of the diameter of the tunnel; underground external walls through the tunnel for the future station of Curundú ", among other works detailed in the statement. Roy noted that this work has been audited by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, the Comptroller General and all information on the project is public. At 9:07 am, the Metro reported - without offering further details - that the San Isidro, Los Andes, Pan de Azúcar, San Miguelito, Pueblo Nuevo, 12 de Octubre, and El Ingenio stations had been taken out of service. It only provided a partial service between the Fernández de Córdoba and Albrook stations (both directions). While some people initially decided to remain inside the wagons waiting for the restoration of service thousands more exited the system to seek other means of transport to get to work. The optimistic travelers were forced to follow them as stations were closed. According to the Panama Metro, the hold up was due to problems with a train in the Vía Argentina area. After 9:00 am, the Metro informed, through its Twitter account, that it had a partial service on line 1, between Santo Tomás-Albrook (both directions) and Fernández de Córdoba-San Isidro ( both ways ). The stations without service are: Vía Argentina and Iglesia del Carmen. According to the Metro, a train at Via Argentina had a brake system failure and was moved to the workshop area. The contract between the state company and the Alstom Panama subsidiary is to maintain the first 20 trains that are part of Line 1 and that are close to reaching 800,000 kilometers of travel. The contracting will be carried out by direct means, considering that Alstom is the manufacturer, supplier and current person in charge of the maintenance of the trains and wagons of the line that has been operating since 2014. Roberto Roy, Chairman of the Metro's board of directors, said that the maintenance service seeks to guarantee safe conditions in the system's operations. He stressed that once the 800,000 kilometers is reached, high-level maintenance must be managed. The work includes the maintenance of the brake system, which was linked to one of the "incidents" for which the Line 1 service was recently paralyzed. "We have learned from these incidents and have taken steps to maintain the reliability of the system.
