Up In Smoke

Truth is stranger than fiction.

Fire has destroyed a yacht docked at the former Trump Hotel in P.C. this morning.

The Niña Isis was a ship used by the Bomberos to extinguish fires on other vessels in the Bay of Panama. Not any more.

Ineptitude seems to be the order of the day.

Automatic fire control systems may or may not be effective. We've gone through some fire at sea training and were told that if the fire on a fiberglass-hulled boat isn't put out within the first 60 seconds, the boa6t will be a total loss.

If interested in our experience with boat fire,  I invite you to check out my account:    http://jimbondoux.com/Miscellany/Fire1.html

Very true for fiberglass boats!

If you look at the remains of the boat in Keiths pictures, it is obviously a steel hulled boat. Any active and well-maintained fire suppressing system could have stalled the fire quite a bit. IF it started in the engine room, which it appears from the photos that it did.

Firefighters from three Panama stations and Panama’s Sea and Air  Service (SENAN) battled a fire on a $12 million Discovery luxury yacht on Thursday afternoon, May 21. "Discovery" caught fire in the Amador marina and was moved to enable firefighters from Calidonia, Balboa and Plaza Amador to douse the flames that totally consumed the vessel despite their efforts.
