Electricity: Thermal Generation Upwards

Partly determined by the behavior of the energy supply from thermal sources, between January and July 2018 and the same period in 2019 the electricity generation in Panama grew 4%.

According to the latest report of the General Comptroller of Panama, in the first seven months of 2019 were generated 6,503 million kwh, which is equivalent to a 3.6% increase over the 6,503 million offered in the same period of 2018.

The figures specify that from January to July in the country were offered 3,258 million kwh of electricity generated from renewable sources, including hydropower, wind and solar, a figure that is 33.4% lower than the 4,889 million kwh reported in the same period of 2018.

For the periods concerned the generation of electricity by thermal sources increased 119%, going from 1,248 million kwh to 2,734 million kwh.

Between 2018 and 2019 the energy generated by thermal sources in Panama grew 110%, a rise that contrasts with the 23% drop reported between 2017-2018.

The most recent data from the General Comptroller of Panama, in 2019 11,135 million kwh were generated, which is equivalent to a 3.3% increase over the 10,783 million offered in 2018.

The figures show that last year the country offered 5,866 million kWh of electricity generated from renewable sources, which includes hydro, wind and solar, a figure 30% lower than the 8,415 million kWh reported in 2018.

For the years in question, electricity generation from thermal sources doubled from 2,111 million kWh to 4,486 million kWh.
