More Chinese Auto Parts in Panama

In the first three months of the year imports of vehicle parts in the country totaled approximately $53 million, and purchases from China grew by 13% compared to the same period in 2017.

Variation of imports
According to estimates by CentralAmericaData, between the first quarter of 2017 and the same period in 2018 the import value of accessories and spare parts for vehicles in Panama registered a decrease of 3%, falling from $54 million to $53 million.

During the periods in question, purchases from China increased, rising from $5.6 million to $6.3 million.

Origin of imports 
From January to March 2018, 22% of the value imported by companies in Panama came from the USA, 17% from the Panama Free Trade Zone, 12% from China, 10% from South Korea and 10% from Japan. 

The USA is the country of origin of imports from Panama that decreased the most in the first quarter of the last seven years, as in 2012 it represented 18% of the total value purchased, and in 2018 that figure dropped to 10%.

Business in Central America Barely Grew
According to estimates by CentralAmericaData, between 2017 and 2018 the value of imported parts and spare parts of vehicles in Central America registered a variation of just 0.13%, going from $1.099 million to $1.101 million.

In the last seven years the region has reported a sustained rise in imports, recording an average growth of 6%.

Guatemala and Panama, Main Buyers
The main importer in the region remained Guatemala with $319 million, followed by Panama with $221 million, Costa Rica with $182 million, Honduras with $161 million, El Salvador with $156 million, and Nicaragua with $62 million.

When separating the region between the Northern Triangle and the southern markets, the figures show that companies in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras concentrate 58% of regional imports.

Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama account for the remaining 42%.

Panama Purchases More Auto Parts from Mexico

As of September 2019, imports of vehicle parts into the Panamanian market totaled approximately $184 million, and purchases from Mexican companies increased 17% over the same period in 2018.

Variation of Imports
According to CentralAmericaData's estimates, between January and September 2018 and the same period in 2019 the value of imported vehicle parts and replacements in Panama registered a 10% increase, from $167 million to $184 million.

The increase reported for the months in question in 2019, reinforces the increase in purchases recorded in the same period in 2017, when the year-on-year variation was 3%.

Origin of Imports
In the first nine months of 2019, 22% of the value imported by companies in Panama came from the United States, 16% from Panama's Free Zone, 11% from China, 10% from Belgium and 8% from Mexico.

The U.S. is the country of origin of Panamanian imports that has decreased the most for the period in question over the last eight years, since in 2012 it represented 34% of the total value purchased, and in 2019 it fell to 22%.
