Panamanian exports came to  $583.9 million in the first 10 months of 2018 an increase of 3.6% compared to the same period last year.

Bananas, waste, and scrap of steel, copper and aluminum; wood, fishmeal and fish oil, and unrefined sugar are the main economic indicators that drove the growth

The sale of 242.2 million kilograms of bananas totaled $85.8 million dollars, an increase of 2.4% according to the  Comptroller General.

Of the 15 items analyzed by the Comptroller’s Office, 9 recorded a growth in the value of exports.

Other products of the sea (tuna, tilapia, cobia, and dorado), waste and scrap of steel, copper, and aluminum; and unrefined sugar are the three segments that recorded the largest percentage increase.

Between January and October of 2018, 50.4 million kilograms of unrefined sugar were exported to the United States for a value of $27.5 million dollars. 22.9% more than the value paid for shipments last year.

Rodrigo Cárdenas, general manager of the Agroindustrial Division of the Calesa Group, said that the difference between one year and another of this product is due to the fluctuation of the price of the quintal of raw sugar.

In Panama, mills have an export quota of 36,000 metric tons of raw sugar per year to the United States. The quota is distributed among the four sugar mills that operate in Panama and each one corresponds to 9,000 thousand metric tons of sugar.

Most mills export their quota between April and May when the sugar harvest in the country ends.

Panama exports plummet in first quarter

exports.jpg

Posted 19/05/2019

Panama exports fell 7.6 percent in the first quarter of the year reports the Comptroller General.

The sale of products such as banana, melon, wood, tuna, tilapia, cobia and dorado accounted for $156.8 million between January and March 2019. The figure represents a decrease of 7.6% compared to the same period of 2018,

only four report an increase in the value of their sales--  bananas, melon and watermelon, and unrefined sugar.

Some, 84.9 million kilograms of banana were exported, for a value of $29.8 million . an increase of 24.7% compared to the first three months of last year.

"This trend could begin to reverse in the second half of the year, when exports of beef, cobia, and fruit to China would be added."

The greatest fall in the value of exports is recorded in other seafood (tuna, tilapia, cobia and dorado), shrimp, fish and fish fillet. Sales of steel, copper and aluminum waste and scrap also declined.

Rosmer Jurado, president of the Panamanian Association of Exporters (APEX), believes that until the first half of the year will be accounted for "a modest growth" and this mainly due to adverse weather conditions and a fall in international prices of products such as wood and coffee. "We are going through a  situation that is affecting us all in the region," said Jurado.

However, it believes that this trend could begin to reverse in the second half of the year when the exports of beef, cobia, and fruit to China will be added.

The Netherlands, the United States, China, India, Costa Rica and Taiwan are the main destinations for Panamanian exports.

The banana reflected a 33.2% increase, for the melon the improvement was 58.1%, the watermelon was 33.9% and the coffee 40%.

In Panama, however, negative variations were recorded  in the pineapples (23.1%), shrimps, down 38.9%; fish and fish fillet, with a decrease of 23.9% and unrefined sugar, with a decline of 13.8%.
