Various authorities of the Panama Canal and youth will analyze in a meeting the situation, challenges and opportunities of the interoceanic highway, an official source reported today.

The activity called "The Role of Youth in the future of the Panama Canal," which will take place on December 6, aims to share ideas, as well as to examine the short and long term perspectives, said the entity that governs the canal route.

The meeting, which takes place for the second time, will be held at the permanent headquarters of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino), located on the banks of the Canal.

The forum aimed at people between 15 and 30 years, aims to provide useful and reliable information, as well as encourage attendees to be actively involved in decisions to ensure the competitiveness and value of the interoceanic route.

The activities that will include the meeting will be: plenaries with the Canal administrator, Jorge Quijano; work tables based on institutionality, competitiveness and sustainability; and the signing of an intergenerational commitment.

Through the canal, built by the US At the beginning of the last century and transferred to Panama on December 31, 1999, near 6% of world trade passes and joins more than 140 maritime routes and 1,700 ports in 160 different countries.

The canal put into service in June 2016 its first expansion, a monumental work with a cost of at least 5,600 million dollars, consisting of a new lane to make way for the Neopanamax, ships with up to three times the load capacity (up to 14,000 containers) of those that pass through the operational locks since 1914.
