The Panamanian authorities inaugurated a new center of the National Institute for Women in the capital, which culminated a program of infrastructure adaptation and support for services for women victims of violence supported by the European Union (EU).

The Center for the National Institute for Women in the Province of Panama (CINAMU PANAMÁ) is a space created to offer psychological, legal and social counseling for women victims of gender-based violence, and in its first month of operations served 178 of them, informed the Government today.

It added that, with this inauguration, the infrastructure adaptation and strengthening of services of CINAMU Panama, Colón and San Miguelito is completed by the " Security Cooperation in Panama" Program (SECOPA), financed by the European Union and executed jointly by the Office of Integral Security (OSEGUI), made up by the Ministry of Security, and the National Institute of Women of Panama.

"Currently, 14 Centers of the National Institute for Women (CINAMU) are available in all provinces and indigenous regions," an official statement said Friday.

According to the National Institute for Women, the CINAMU "have been highlighted as a successful model for the region, which has progressively benefited more than 15,000 women nationwide since 2014."

The CINAMU PANAMA opened on June 15 and has served 178 women. It is a role model experience for the prevention of violence and is at the same time a center of opportunities, at no cost and in a confidential manner, through specialized personnel, the official statement said.

The Deputy Head of Delegation to Nicaragua and Panama of the European Union, Giovanni Di Girolamo, said that the EU "invests around $ 32 million in the SECOPA Program" and said it is an initiative integrated into the strategy of the European Union towards the Central American region.

"Panama is a friendly and associate country of the European Union in political and economic issues, as well as other countries in the field of human rights, democracy and security," the diplomat added, according to official information.

UN Women holds forum against gender violence in Panama

Fri, 11/30/2018 - 17:15

More than a third of the world's women have suffered sexual or physical violence as noted by the UN, which in a statement issued this Friday called for solidarity for all the victims in this issue across the globe, as well as the defenders and people close to these girls who are constantly victims of harassment.

Achim Steiner (United Nations Development Program), Henrietta Fore (Unicef), Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka (UN Women) and Natalia Kanem (United Nations Population Fund), shared the document in which according to Efe, they inform that governments, the private sector, the artistic community, civil society organizations, the academic world and committed citizens work to eradicate this problem that ends up consuming 2% of the domestic product of each country, about 1,500 million dollars around the world.

"The last year has been extraordinary in terms of the awareness that has been raised about the scope and magnitude of the different forms of violence against women and girls. The #MeToo campaign, one of the most viral and powerful social movements in the world in recent times, has put this issue in the spotlight," the statement added.

In search of complying with the plans established in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Nobel Prizes won by the Iraqi Yazidí Nadia Murad and Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege allow a great advantage, since both are known for their fight against harassment and violence against women and girls in conflict societies.

This statement was exposed in the activity that takes place in the capital of Panama with the organization UN Women for Latin America and the Caribbean, with the presence of Barbados, Argentina and the host country itself, in order to highlight the work of each of the victims and survivors of this problem, as well as the policies to be implemented and the ideal responses for this type of situation.

OPINION: Machismo lives on in Panama

Posted 19/11/2019

The macho roots of our culture are reflected daily in the treatment that many women receive in the country, a reality that goes beyond the capacities of the institutions to offer suitable, efficient and expeditious mechanisms that seek to defend the human rights of victims. For some, it could be something insignificant and even jocular the way in which a group of women in social networks were humiliated publicly and for several days.

Just as teenage pregnancy may also seem unimportant; the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, especially among the most vulnerable groups of the population; the silenced violence against girls and young people across the country and the lack of true sex education in our schools. Possibly, the perpetrators of shared barbarity in social networks were, in turn, victims of some form of abuse. But that does not excuse them. Nor is the "little matter" of Panamanian society an excuse, which generally chooses to turn its gaze from behaviors of this nature. However, somewhere we must start making the change. Enough already.- LA PRENSA, Nov. 19
