The trade union leader Mercedes Cigarruista told reporters Monday that workers of the National Institute of Aqueducts and Sewerage (Idaan) are on strike despite "threats" they have received from officials of the agency. "The head of accounting specifically had threatened the partners and we can not allow that (...) this is everyone’s struggle and we are all going to benefit. When we are on strike, the Employees Association is in charge", said Cigarruista told journalists. A group of striking workers demonstrated peacefully before the Ministry of Economy and Finance on Monday. Idaan employs some 3,000 people, and according to the unionists the majority has joined the strike, which requires compliance with a salary scale approved by the previous administration. The director of the Idaan, Juan Felipe De La Iglesia, has told local media that the adjustment demanded by workers would cost the institution about 6 million annually. This institution is valued by users as one of the worst in performance. Last October, Idaan workers went on strike for almost two weeks against the alleged privatization of the organization and to demand claims. The Idaan presents problems such as a multi-million dollar delinquency of customers and lack of capacity to manage issues such as multiple pipe breaks, which are a constant in the capital. The Panamanian businessmen said that overcoming the crisis experienced by the Idaan, as well as other entities dedicated to public services, goes through a reengineering that includes a new corporate governance structure and renewed processes to attract qualified and qualified human resources. http://www.panamatoday.com/panama/panamanian-state-water-agancy-workers-strike-reaches-one-week-line-7394

The agreement between the Association of Employees of the Institute of Aqueducts and Sewerage Systems (Idaan) and the board of directors of the organization establishes the immediate payment of the salary scale, and the provision of materials and equipment necessary for a better functioning of the company. This same Thursday the Parliament informed the Budget Commission approved transfers of funds to the Idaan for 5.2 million dollars that will allow to move the funds for the adjustment in the salary scale of the permanent employees of the agency. Another transfer of money for $ 400,968 approved by the deputies "will be used to defray the salaries of casual workers," said a statement from the Parliament.
