  4. I notice that this event is advertised in the calendar and was recently posted by the moderator. I would like to know the mission of ABC (Amigos de Boquete Ciudad) and what a Poker Run is. More interest may be generated if a description of the organization and the event were included.

  7. Hello everyone! For October, the amount of monthly donations was $2443.00 and expenses totaled $2032.00. Thank you to everyone who contributed! We received another large contribution this month and we cannot thank the donators enough! Thank you to the anonymous donor for the $1500.00. This will go a long way in helping us catch up on some of our bills. 3 dogs found their forever home this month, but no cats were adopted. If you have any friends or relatives looking for a pet, please direct them to our site or have them contact us, as we have many ready for adoption. Please consider fostering an animal if you are able to do so. When you foster an animal with ARF, we take care of all food and medical expenses – we just need you to provide a loving and protective environment. If you are not in the position to foster an animal, please consider making a donation. Any amount is greatly appreciated. Bingo – Unfortunately bingo was cancelled for November 3rd. We realized a bit too late that the date fell too close to all the holidays here in Panama. This will take place again either in January or February. Thanksgiving Lunch/Dinner! – Get your tickets soon….we already have a large group that will be attending. On Thanksgiving Day (November 24th) we will be having a Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings. Rather than slave in the kitchen all day, bring your friends and family and let us do all the work and help the animals at the same time! As Thanksgiving is associated with a bountiful feast, we would also like to ask those attending to give back and bring a bag of food (Purina/Pedigree/Kirkland) or cat/dog toys to contribute for the many animals we currently have in our care. The tickets will be $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for children. The event will run from 3:00pm-5:00pm at the Animales Building and we will be raffling off two gift baskets with autumn themed goodies. There will also be wine, beer, soda and water available for purchase. Tea and coffee are included with the ticket price. Holiday Bazaar for WINOS (Women in Need of Shopping) – This is an afternoon event planned for November 30th at Mike’s Global Grill. Some of the venders, to mention a few, will be JUJU Beads, Los Angeles Arts, Mr. Dog and StyleDots. Thanks very much to Yolanda The Jewelry Lady for donating two items to be raffled at this event. Time: 12:00N-4:00pm. Our new charges: We came across two very sad cases this month. Zembla (the white dog) was rescued near the airport in David. Just skin and bones, she also has tick fever. It will be a long road for this girl before she is healthy again. We also took on Pepe. He is also needing to gain some weight and has a horrible case of mange. He also currently has a very bad infection and is being treated with anti-biotics. As you can see from the photo, he has very little hair. Once healthy again, he’s going to be a very handsome boy. Update: Now attached is a picture of Pepe (now being called Marley) in foster care. The cone is to keep him from scratching under his chin, where he has some pretty bad open sores, and the socks are to lessen the effect of him scratching his body elsewhere. As you can imagine, these are not short-term recoveries. We want to thank the fosters for taking them in……fostering saves lives. You can make a donation thru our website or at the Tuesday market. Mike’s Global Grill has also set up a donation box, so stop by and have a beer and help out Zembla and Pepe. Donations will be counted for them towards our November numbers, as October’s numbers were closed off a few days early as our accountant is currently away. Animal Law: We have decided to provide a few tidbits from the Animal Law 70 here in Panama in each Monthly report until we feel we have covered the relevant information pertaining to domestic animals. Let’s start from the beginning with the purpose of this law and some definitions: The purpose of this law is to prevent, eradicate and punish mistreatment, neglect and acts of cruelty against domestic animals. For purposes of this decree, the following terms shall be understood as follows: 1. Domestic animal (Pet). That species that lives or is likely to coexist with humans, posing a sentimental value, and whose life cycle takes place entirely in reliance on this. Whether as pets, for work, for show, for sport, for farm production purposes or any activity related to humans. 2. Acts of cruelty. Inhumane actions that create pain and suffering to another living being. 3. Breeding Centers (hatcheries). Site intended for animal breeding. 4. Euthanasia. Quiet death, without suffering and induced or performed by a qualified and licensed veterinarian. 5. Exploitation. Commercial use of an animal species. 5. Overcrowding. Stacking and agglomerating animals in conditions that threaten their physical integrity and health. 6. Owner. One who has power, rights and duties of a pet. 7. Dignified Treatment. Action taken to prevent pain and suffering of the animals during breeding, transport, capture, holding, quarantine, marketing, development, training and sacrifice, among others. *** ARF is a small non-profit animal organization dedicated to the rescue, care, foster and adoption of the unwanted and neglected animals in Boquete and the surrounding areas. Events: Recap: Pancake Breakfast/Adoption Event: This event turned out to be a great success all around. Thank you to all those that supported us by attending, and to all of our hard working volunteers who made this happen. We actually oversold the event so we have put this on the calendar for next year in February. Three dogs found their forever homes and for those 3 dogs this event made a difference! ARF has a busy November coming up with 3 functions. Make sure to mark your calendars! Bingo – November 3rd at La Villa at the BCP. Cash prizes! Remember, the more people who come, the bigger the prizes are so bring your friends! We just got our new bingo cards in-300-no duplicates, so we have plenty to go around. Thanksgiving Lunch/Dinner! On Thanksgiving Day (November 24th) we will be having a Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings. Rather than slave in the kitchen all day, bring your friends and family and let us do all the work and help the animals at the same time! As a “thank you” to the community for all of your support in the past we will be offering an affordable alternative to what is available in Boquete. As Thanksgiving is associated with a bountiful feast, we would also like to ask those attending to give back and bring a bag of food (Purina/Pedigree/Kirkland) or cat/dog toys to contribute for the many animals we currently have in our care. The tickets will be $20.00. The event will run from 2:00pm-4:00pm at the Animales Building and we will be raffling off two gift baskets with Autumn themed goodies. There will also be a full bar available. Holiday Bazaar for WINOS (Women in Need of Shopping) – This is an afternoon event planned for November 30th at Mike’s Global Grill…..just in time to get started on your Christmas shopping. Many unique vendors will be there selling their wares…….details will be announced shortly. And for December……we are taking a break! Attached are pictures of a couple of long timers with ARF needing a forever home: Buddy and Bingo Buddy was hit by a car and lacking nutrition at the time of his accident. We have had him since April and would really like to find a home for him. He is about 5 years old, medium size, and has a great personality. He loves to play with other dogs and is high energy. He is patient and waits for his food until he is given permission to eat. He does not like rain or thunder and wants to be inside the house during any storms. Bingo has also been with us for quite some time and we would like to find him a forever home to make room for the many other animals out there waiting for a spot. Bingo is fine with being an outside dog. He is about 5 years old and makes an excellent watch dog and loyal companion. He was surrendered to us in February of this year. 9. ARF is proud to present its first annual Holiday Bazaar for W.I.N.O.S. (Women In Need Of Shopping) Location: Mike’s Global Grill Date: Wednesday, November 30, 2016 12:00 – 4:00 We are currently seeking artsy-crafty and creative persons to display their wares for this fun-filled holiday gift fair to benefit ARF. Are you willing to contribute 25% of your profit to ARF, AND contribute one item to be raffled off? If so, keep reading! If you don’t make any sales that day, then quite obviously you will not have a profit on which to make a contribution. But let’s be positive, everyone will have sales! No vendor fees required. This is a great way to benefit a very worthy cause, make contacts, and have a fun time! You will need to bring your own setup (e.g. table, display, decorations.) In addition, you’ll need to bring your own change fund because we don’t have one. Keep in mind the theme will be dogs, cats, and holiday gift-giving. We have limited space inside, but there’s plenty of room outside where you can set up. Additionally, we will have the Abuelo Rum tent at the front of the restaurant. It’s “first come, first served” for placement, so contact us as soon as possible. Contact us at any time from the receipt of this email to reserve your vendor area. If we have tickled your fancy, contact us at: debbyb@theopenfile.com arf.boquete@gmail.com
  10. ARF is having a pancake breakfast on Saturday, October 1st from 9:00am to 11:30am. $10 includes a stack of pancakes, butter, syrup, bacon, fruit and tea or coffee. Juice, Mimosas and Bloody Mary's are also available for purchase. This will be held at the Animales building in Alto Boquete. Mr. Dog with be there with lots of items for your pets......bones, collars, leashes, shampoos, carriers, kennels, beds, outfits and more. He will also have available his engraving machine so you can get an ID tag for your pet if you do not already have one (did you know it is a requirement of the Animal Law 70 in Panama that your domestic animal have a tag, with at least a number to call in case they are found wandering?) Protect your furry friend, and get a tag for him if you don't already have one. Too many animals, that are obviously owned, are found wandering the streets because somehow they managed to escape but they have no ID tag, so there is no way to contact the owner and get them home. We will also have on display many of our dogs and cats that are ready and available for adoption, so if you are looking to add a family member, this would be a great opportunity to come by and meet them. Tickets can be purchased from the ARF tent at the Tuesday market and Mailboxes Etc.......tickets go on sale Tuesday, September 6th. Time: 5pm -9pm Place OASIS restaurant F&B will be available for purchase from the restaurant Admission: A donation of $15 will be requested at the door. We hope to see all you rockin' and bluesin' babies there!
  17. Everybody had a a blast at the BJBF fundraiser at Chiriqui Farms on Friday, Dec. 4! A full house, yummy food, and great music by Gary Whiting's band, supported by our beloved Yella, to rock the extra pounds off! There was hardly ever free space on the dance floor. If you thought it couldn't get any better you were wrong! A huge surprise came when 13 year old Ana Gabriela of Alto Boquete took the mic and displayed an amazing bluesy voice by belting out Bonnie Raitt's "You got to love me like a man" followed by 'You ain't nothing but a hound dog'. Certainly a huge talent to watch out for! If you thought it couldn't get any better after this you were wrong again! The absolute highlight came when our local amazing guitar wizard Edgar took the stage to put the audience in a trance by playing his versions of "Hotel California" followed by the all-time favorite of "Butterfly", with Yella doing the vocals on both songs.... If there was ever an anticipation of what the Boquete Jazz&Blues Festival 2016 will be about...this was it! You got to be sorry if you missed this wonderful event! Make sure not to miss out on the future BJBF fundraisers: January 8, 2016: Pollera dance show at the OASIS, followed by YELLA FEVER to rock the night away! January 22, 2016: Black&White party at the Sabor restaurant in Valle Escondido. Watch out for further announcements of these events!
