  2. Hello everyone! For February, the amount of monthly donations was $2909.00 and expenses totaled $3817.00. Thank you to everyone who contributed! A special thank you goes out to our friend Steve who made a substantial donation, and Marian who held a fundraiser at La Villa to raise money for food purchases. In February 7 dogs and 1 cat found their forever home. We currently have 25 dogs and 8 cats in our care. If you have any friends or relatives looking for a pet, please direct them to our site or have them contact us, as we have many ready for adoption. Please consider fostering an animal if you are able to do so. We are in desperate need of temporary homes for the many animals that the community is alerting us to and are having a very difficult time keeping up. It is never our goal to turn away an animal in need, but we only have so many places to put these animals, and we need your help. When you foster an animal with ARF, we take care of all food and medical expenses – we just need you to provide a loving and protective environment. Bingo recap: After the unfortunate robbery at La Villa, we had to scramble to find an alternate location for our bingo. Thanks to Mike and Heidi at Mike’s Global Grill for offering their place at the last minute! Many participants commented that they liked the switch and also that they would like to see bingo held once a month. We will keep you updated on these developments. We will also be raffling off 2 spa inspired packages. Tickets can be purchased at the Tuesday market, Mailboxes Etc. and at the door if we don’t sell out. We also have our Hoedown coming up in April – keep your eyes and ears open for more details. Looking for a home Susie is a sweet and very smart little Panamanian Bird Dog, very rare we are certain. She is looking forward to finding her permanent home. Susie was rescued after giving birth to 10 pups. Wendy We happened to follow up on a call to visit a finca near Isla Verde one hour after this pretty girl had given birth to her pups. Wendy is about two and a half years old (1/17) and gets along well with other dogs and cats and loves to play. She is a bit on the quiet side – doesn’t bark much. She is on the smaller-medium size, and weighs about 18 kg or 40 lbs. Animal Law: We are providing information on the Animal Law 70 here in Panama in each monthly report until we feel we have covered the relevant information pertaining to domestic animals and Article 9 will be the last installment on this go-around. Article 9 addresses the sale of animals. Article 9. Trade of domestic animals is permitted provided that the exhibition and sale are conducted in rooms with adequate facilities for each species and that health regulations are met. Every natural or legal person may sell dogs and cats as long as these are at least two months old. The sale of domestic animals will not be allowed on public roads or highways. Until next month……. 3. ASHA has escaped tonight. Please call Karen on 6525-3160 if you see her. One blue eye, one brown. She has had two operations to be spayed, but for some reason it won’t stick. She is at the end of her heat cycle now. She cannot get pregnant, but she is obviously “looking for some love”. These people have a fenced in yard and they still can’t figure out how she got out. The live about half way up the loop on Volcancito road. Please keep an eye out for her. She is a very loving and gentle dog.
  4. Susie is looking for an outgoing active partner. Someone who is not a couch potato, but likes long walks and lots of play time. She would love another dog to play with. Susie is non-stop full tilt play. She has lots of energy. She is about 3 and is spayed. Susie was rescued after having 10 puppies. She was travelling down the road each day to wait for people to dump garbage in the dumpster for her meals. Thankfully we were made aware of the situation shortly after she had her pups and were able to provide all of them with proper nutritional meals. 6. Hi all, We are urgently requesting dog food donations for one of our fosters. They have 8 of our dogs and will run out of food tomorrow. We have limited volunteers right now, and even fewer with transport. Unfortunately we were not advised earlier, otherwise we could have made arrangements. If anyone would be willing to drop off a bag of dry dog food (they currently eat Pedigree), please contact Javier on 6965-9423. Thank you!

  8. The cat feeding, trapping and release program was originally set up by Joan James who was a long time resident of Boquete. Upon her departure, Kirsten and Ray Quimby agreed to take over this valuable and necessary program for the community. Essentially the goal is to identify feral cats, provide them with food, trap them and have them sterilized and released back into the wild to prevent further breeding. Currently there are eight feeding stations in the Boquete area which feed more than 100 cats per month. In the past six months (as of November 2016) 36 cats have been trapped and sterilized. We need your help with donations to keep this program alive. Donations go towards food, and the sterilization costs ($8 per cat). Our current need is approximately $300.00 a month for food and we are woefully short of that goal each month. We would like to see this program become a thriving and successful arm of the ARF umbrella, and we are hoping you will help us achieve this. If you would like to make a donation towards this essential program, please note “cat trapping program” when making your donation. 9. Meet Celestino. Celestino was in a motorcycle accident about 12 years ago, and now is partially paralyzed. He lives alone and does a bit of woodworking for a small income. Celestino has two cats and one dog that he just adores and that mean the world to him but he struggles with providing food for them, and it is always a constant worry to him that his animals will go hungry. He also has another cat that is hanging around looking for food, but he has been “shooing” the cat away as he didn’t have enough food to feed his own pets. ARF was made aware of Celestino and his situation thru one of our volunteers. We paid him a visit and provided food for his animals. It was a very nice meeting; Celestino is a sweet and humble man who cherishes the companionship he has with his animals. ARF will be trapping and having the stray cat fixed at the January clinic. We are looking for sponsors for Celestino and his animals. The cost of food per month works out to $54.00 for the cats and his dog. We would like to find a sponsor for each month of the year. Is there anyone out there willing to donate to cover February? Part of ARF’s mission is to assist those who genuinely care for their animals but may not have the means to do so. It is only thru your kind donations that this can be achieved. Celestino is also assisted by the Handicapped Foundation (FPI) and Buenos Vecinos. As ARF now joins in helping Celestino with his beloved animals, this represents a true community effort that has improved his life for the better. 10. Tiempo was found roaming in the Alto Boquete area. He is young, sweet, gentle, and comes to people easily. When found, the tip of his tail was damaged and it had to be removed. He also had a tumor on his private part and a testicle that did not descend that were also removed. (Poor guy doesn’t have much luck in this area). Tiempo’s tumor has now grown back and it has been determined that he needs to undergo 3 chemo treatments…..however, he currently has tick fever, so he needs to recover from this first. The chemo treatments are $60 each and we are looking for donations to cover these and his other medical expenses. If you would like to help Tiempo on his road to recovery, please visit our site and reference “Tiempo” on your Pay Pal donation. You can also contribute at the Tuesday market. 13. ZEMBLA Zembla was rescued in David at the end of October. She was starving, had tick fever, liver problems and a bad hind leg. With good care, she made a quick recovery - medicines, good nutrition and lots of TLC and love. She now walks on four legs again, she has a clean bill of health, has been spayed, dewormed and vaccinated and is ready for her new home. She is alert and will make a good watchdog. She goes along fine with other dogs; not sure about cats. 14. The two reformed ferals – Lee and Mia These two cuties were trapped back in July at the Boquete Country Club. Since they were so young when captured, our foster was determined to try to domesticate them, rather than just having them fixed, and turning out two more cats. Her efforts have been successful, and although still a bit timid, these two are more comfortable with people as each day passes. Mia is extremely loving and purrs like a locomotive. Lee is a bit more reserved, but loves attention as well. We would like to try to find a home that could take both of them in as they are very bonded. 16. Hello all, Well, I thought we might get a bit of a break over the upcoming holidays, but this is proving not to be the case. This is a plea to current, past, and future ARF fosters, as well as ARF donators, contacts, and the Boquete community in general for foster or forever homes for these animals. In the past two weeks + there have been many animals brought to our attention that we need to find placement for, some needing immediate placement. The most urgent are noted below. Pictures are attached. Cholo: This handsome guy was brought to our attention by a gentleman in Alto Boquete. Cholo had been hit by a car and they graciously offered to take care of him during the recovery period. Once he was feeling better, however, Cholo made his great escape and was wandering the neighborhood (probably because he was not yet fixed). Another rescue angel found him, and now he is recovering from his neuter surgery on Saturday. Cholo needs to be moved as soon as possible as he needs to be monitored and his current environment is not ideal. He has already removed his stiches from the surgery and had to be taken back to the vet to be re-stitched. Elle Mae: This young girl has been hanging around someone's house, but sadly they cannot keep her and she must find place to go by December 2nd. They have fattened her up and gotten her spayed and now she is ready to make a great pet for someone with a fenced yard. She is very friendly, playful with other dogs and is a good watchdog. If you can give Ellie Mae a safe place, you'll be rewarded by the warmest welcomes every time you come home! Vijeo: This very sweet old guy was one of the dogs that was the inspiration for the founder of ARF to start the organization. He was run over by a bus about 5 years ago and his legs are a little wobbly, but he still gets around quite well. His many scars are testament to the rough life he has endured. He has an interest in cats, in a friendly way, and pretends to be a "macho man" around other dogs, but in reality, he just ends up whining at them. Vijeo is a senior dog in his final years, and we would like to find a loving home where he can spend the rest of his days lounging and receiving the love that he deserves. Suzie: This little girl is being surrendered by her owner. She recently had 10 puppies and was discovered and brought to our attention soon after the birth. On a daily basis, she was waiting by a garbage bin for scraps to be discarded as her "meal" for the day . She was in terrible condition and still has a ways to go before she is healthy. We helped the owner with food and supplements during the nursing, so she looks a bit better, but still needs some TLC and proper vet care. She is a little feisty around new people, but once she gets to know you she is a love bug. (picture is prior to being properly fed so she has some weight on her now). When you are a foster for ARF, all food, medication and vet bill costs are covered by ARF. There are also many more out there that we have not even had an opportunity to investigate so we are also appealing for bi-lingual people to help with investigations. Our current volunteer base is overwhelmed with trying to keep up. If you, or anyone you know can help with either fostering or investigations, please contact us. 17. Oct 29, 2016 - This little guy, was rescued by someone in David. He was taken to St. Francis animal hospital and was being treated for a very bad case of mange. Pepe's rescuer then took him to a foster home, which turned out not to be ideal. ARF got involved and found a new foster home for him. Nov 2, 2016 - Updated picture of Pepe (now being called Marley) in foster care. The cone is to keep him from scratching under his chin, where he has some pretty bad open sores, and the socks are to lessen the effect of him scratching his body elsewhere. Nov 9, 2016 - Marley has gained 2 pounds in the last week, but continues to have a very bad and persistent cough which is being monitored. His vet visit on Monday revealed that he has tick fever, so he is now on antibiotics for that. The vet bills are rising, and we could use your help again. All of the animals that we rescue come to ARF in various ways. Rescuing animals is not just simply taking them in, feeding them and placing them in new homes. It is more complicated than that. ARF is often called to assist with animals that have been abused, are in distress or have been neglected. This includes a visit to the site or home where the animal is located, and an evaluation of the situation. If an owner is involved, they are spoken to regarding the condition of their animal and if steps are not taken to correct the situation, their animal can be seized. In many cases, animals are just found wandering the streets in a poor state. We try to help as many of these animals as much as we can. Often, it depends on if there is a foster available to take them in. They can be in our care for only a few days or as long a year. We are responsible for the health care and the socialization of each of our animals. This is necessary for a successful adoption. All of this takes time, money and foster homes. If you would like to donate your time, money or be a foster home please contact us. 18. UPDATE NOVEMBER 11, 2016: Alex escaped from the nice people who were looking after him, and has again been found. He is not in an ideal situation right now, and we are looking for a safe place for him to stay. If you can open your heart and home to this handsome guys until he finds a forever home, please contact us. Alex was hit by a car on September 29th and wandered over to a nearby house. These people have generously offered to look after him. ARF took him to the vet to have his leg examined, and thankfully it was not broken, but a very bad sprain that will take some time to heal. He was given painkillers, a vitamin shot, de-wormer and anti-biotics as he also has a urinary tract infection. Alex was the most cooperative patient I have ever seen! Not even a flinch when he was given his shots and even though this guy must have been feeling miserable and in quite a bit of pain, he still had a very loving and gentle disposition. Alex is about 2 years old. We believe he has an owner as he did have a collar on, but no one has come forward as of yet. If the owners are not found, Alex will be put up for adoption. If you would like to donate towards Alex's medical costs, please visit our website. 19. Hello everyone! For October, the amount of monthly donations was $2443.00 and expenses totaled $2032.00. Thank you to everyone who contributed! We received another large contribution this month and we cannot thank the donators enough! Thank you to the anonymous donor for the $1500.00. This will go a long way in helping us catch up on some of our bills. 3 dogs found their forever home this month, but no cats were adopted. If you have any friends or relatives looking for a pet, please direct them to our site or have them contact us, as we have many ready for adoption. Please consider fostering an animal if you are able to do so. When you foster an animal with ARF, we take care of all food and medical expenses – we just need you to provide a loving and protective environment. If you are not in the position to foster an animal, please consider making a donation. Any amount is greatly appreciated. Bingo – Unfortunately bingo was cancelled for November 3rd. We realized a bit too late that the date fell too close to all the holidays here in Panama. This will take place again either in January or February. Thanksgiving Lunch/Dinner! – Get your tickets soon….we already have a large group that will be attending. On Thanksgiving Day (November 24th) we will be having a Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings. Rather than slave in the kitchen all day, bring your friends and family and let us do all the work and help the animals at the same time! As Thanksgiving is associated with a bountiful feast, we would also like to ask those attending to give back and bring a bag of food (Purina/Pedigree/Kirkland) or cat/dog toys to contribute for the many animals we currently have in our care. The tickets will be $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for children. The event will run from 3:00pm-5:00pm at the Animales Building and we will be raffling off two gift baskets with autumn themed goodies. There will also be wine, beer, soda and water available for purchase. Tea and coffee are included with the ticket price. Holiday Bazaar for WINOS (Women in Need of Shopping) – This is an afternoon event planned for November 30th at Mike’s Global Grill. Some of the venders, to mention a few, will be JUJU Beads, Los Angeles Arts, Mr. Dog and StyleDots. Thanks very much to Yolanda The Jewelry Lady for donating two items to be raffled at this event. Time: 12:00N-4:00pm. Our new charges: We came across two very sad cases this month. Zembla (the white dog) was rescued near the airport in David. Just skin and bones, she also has tick fever. It will be a long road for this girl before she is healthy again. We also took on Pepe. He is also needing to gain some weight and has a horrible case of mange. He also currently has a very bad infection and is being treated with anti-biotics. As you can see from the photo, he has very little hair. Once healthy again, he’s going to be a very handsome boy. Update: Now attached is a picture of Pepe (now being called Marley) in foster care. The cone is to keep him from scratching under his chin, where he has some pretty bad open sores, and the socks are to lessen the effect of him scratching his body elsewhere. As you can imagine, these are not short-term recoveries. We want to thank the fosters for taking them in……fostering saves lives. You can make a donation thru our website or at the Tuesday market. Mike’s Global Grill has also set up a donation box, so stop by and have a beer and help out Zembla and Pepe. Donations will be counted for them towards our November numbers, as October’s numbers were closed off a few days early as our accountant is currently away. Animal Law: We have decided to provide a few tidbits from the Animal Law 70 here in Panama in each Monthly report until we feel we have covered the relevant information pertaining to domestic animals. Let’s start from the beginning with the purpose of this law and some definitions: The purpose of this law is to prevent, eradicate and punish mistreatment, neglect and acts of cruelty against domestic animals. 21. Wendy We happened to follow up on a call to visit a finca near Isla Verde one hour after this pretty girl had given birth to her pups. She is now ready for adoption as all her pups are on their healthy way. Wendy is about two years old and gets along well with other dogs and loves to play. She is a bit on the quiet side – doesn’t bark much. She is on the smaller-medium size, and weighs about 40 lbs. Meet Bobby. He is about 6 months old and a handsome little guy. He is a very sweet and social dog. Bobby was rescued, along with his mom and 5 siblings from the Palo Alto area from a man who was threatening to poison all of them if they were not removed from the area. Judging from his mom’s size, Bobby will probably be on the smaller medium side once full grown. Holiday Bazaar for WINOS (Women in Need of Shopping) – This is an afternoon event planned for November 30th at Mike’s Global Grill…..just in time to get started on your Christmas shopping. Many unique vendors will be there selling their wares…….details will be announced shortly. And for December……we are taking a break! Attached are pictures of a couple of long timers with ARF needing a forever home: Buddy and Bingo Buddy was hit by a car and lacking nutrition at the time of his accident. We have had him since April and would really like to find a home for him. He is about 5 years old, medium size, and has a great personality. He loves to play with other dogs and is high energy. He is patient and waits for his food until he is given permission to eat. He does not like rain or thunder and wants to be inside the house during any storms. Bingo has also been with us for quite some time and we would like to find him a forever home to make room for the many other animals out there waiting for a spot. Bingo is fine with being an outside dog. He is about 5 years old and makes an excellent watch dog and loyal companion. He was surrendered to us in February of this year. 24. Hi all, ARF is a very small organization in Boquete dedicated to helping the lost, abused, neglected and abandoned animals in our community. We are in desperate need of fosters for the animals that we try to help and are seeking your assistance. When you foster for ARF, we cover all expenses - food - medication - vet visits etc. We just need the support of the community in letting these animals have a place to feel safe and secure for a while until they can find a forever home. Most of the dogs we rescue test positive for tick fever. This requires a treatment from anywhere from 15-21 days of medication. Tick fever is the norm these days for the rescues we have, and I encourage any of you who have dogs to please have your animals blood tested if you do not use tick prevention and research the signs of this deadly virus. We have been advised by a local vet that Tick Fever is now rampant in Panama. Please use prevention in the form of Front Line or some other tick deterrent. There are also natural remedies available. We recently rescued "Alex" who was hit by a car in front of Ivan's. Please see his story below: "Alex was hit by a car on September 29thand wandered over to a nearby house. We believe he has an owner as he did have a collar on, but no one has come forward as of yet." If you can help towards Alex's medical expenses, it would be greatly appreciated. We are trying to keep up with the demands of the animals that need help, but we are really just keeping our heads above the water at this point. If you would like to donate, please visit out website at are-boquete.com to help.
