  2. Four adorable female puppies need a loving home! A pregnant dog came to Patricia Ortiz's house in Volcan and immediately gave birth to six adorable puppies. (Two have already been adopted.) The puppies are now about 5 weeks old. The mother has no milk but the puppies are eating regular food. Patricia adopted the mama dog. The mama was spayed at our August 20th clinic, but Patricia cannot keep the puppies as well. The mama is medium size. Yesterday I took 20 lbs. of Kirkland kibble to Patricia for the mama and the puppies, and I gave the puppies anti-parasite medication. (The mama received the anti-parasite injection at our clinic.) See the attached pictures. Apparently the six puppies had the same "daddy" because they all look very similar. To adopt one of these sweet puppies, contact Patricia Ortiz (in Spanish) at 6665-4967, or for English, call me (Dottie) at 6517-8752 and I will arrange for you to meet the puppies...and hopefully you will choose one to be your forever best friend!
  3. Mr. Mitts had a family who loved him and gave him a good life. He spent a lot of time outdoors, but had the ability to come inside as well. His family left Panama and unfortunately was not able to return due to medical reason. Mr. Mitts is currently in a foster home, but they are moving at the beginning of September and cannot take him with them. He is gentle and loving. Mr. Mitts tested positive for the Feline HIV virus although he does not have the disease and may not for many years. He would need to be the only cat in the home so the virus can't spread, or would need to share a place with cats that already have the virus. Tanya is also looking for a new foster home. She is an adult female cat, approx. 6 years old. She would make the ideal companion. Being older, she has a mellow and mature personality and doesn't need to be entertained like a kitten. She does not get along with other cats and would prefer to be the only house cat. She is looking for a lap to “cuddle” on. If you can help with fostering either of these cuties, even for a short time, please contact us. ARF provides all food and any necessary medical treatment.

  5. Hello everyone! For February, the amount of monthly donations was $2909.00 and expenses totaled $3817.00. Thank you to everyone who contributed! A special thank you goes out to our friend Steve who made a substantial donation, and Marian who held a fundraiser at La Villa to raise money for food purchases. In February 7 dogs and 1 cat found their forever home. We currently have 25 dogs and 8 cats in our care. If you have any friends or relatives looking for a pet, please direct them to our site or have them contact us, as we have many ready for adoption. Please consider fostering an animal if you are able to do so. We are in desperate need of temporary homes for the many animals that the community is alerting us to and are having a very difficult time keeping up. It is never our goal to turn away an animal in need, but we only have so many places to put these animals, and we need your help. When you foster an animal with ARF, we take care of all food and medical expenses – we just need you to provide a loving and protective environment. Bingo recap: After the unfortunate robbery at La Villa, we had to scramble to find an alternate location for our bingo. Thanks to Mike and Heidi at Mike’s Global Grill for offering their place at the last minute! Many participants commented that they liked the switch and also that they would like to see bingo held once a month. We will keep you updated on these developments. We also have our Hoedown coming up in April – keep your eyes and ears open for more details. Looking for a home Susie is a sweet and very smart little Panamanian Bird Dog, very rare we are certain. She is looking forward to finding her permanent home. Susie was rescued after giving birth to 10 pups. Wendy We happened to follow up on a call to visit a finca near Isla Verde one hour after this pretty girl had given birth to her pups. Wendy is about two and a half years old (1/17) and gets along well with other dogs and cats and loves to play. She is a bit on the quiet side – doesn’t bark much. She is on the smaller-medium size, and weighs about 18 kg or 40 lbs. Animal Law: We are providing information on the Animal Law 70 here in Panama in each monthly report until we feel we have covered the relevant information pertaining to domestic animals and Article 9 will be the last installment on this go-around. 6. Susie is looking for an outgoing active partner. Someone who is not a couch potato, but likes long walks and lots of play time. She would love another dog to play with. Susie is non-stop full tilt play. She has lots of energy. She is about 3 and is spayed. Susie was rescued after having 10 puppies. She was travelling down the road each day to wait for people to dump garbage in the dumpster for her meals. Thankfully we were made aware of the situation shortly after she had her pups and were able to provide all of them with proper nutritional meals. 10. ZEMBLA Zembla was rescued in David at the end of October. She was starving, had tick fever, liver problems and a bad hind leg. With good care, she made a quick recovery - medicines, good nutrition and lots of TLC and love. She now walks on four legs again, she has a clean bill of health, has been spayed, dewormed and vaccinated and is ready for her new home. She is alert and will make a good watchdog. She goes along fine with other dogs; not sure about cats. 11. Here are a few of our friends hoping to find a loving home for the new year: Charlie is a male Cocker, around 3 years old and weighs 35 lbs. He likes to chase cats, but does not harm them. He is friendly with other dogs, chickens and children. His favorite pass time is cuddling. Very sweet little guy. Winnie is ready for adoption! It has been since February that this girl has been given TLC to get back her health and her weight…..she looks like a real Boxer now! She was being starved by her owner, and it was touch and go for a while there. Winnie is a very smart girl. She is good with other dogs but not with cats. She loves cuddles and car rides. She is very much a family dog that is very loyal and protective. Susie is a sweet and very smart little Panamanian Bird Dog, very rare we are certain. Her foster is teaching her basic commands and how to walk on a leash. She will be ready for adoption in January 2017 and is looking forward to finding her permanent home. Susie was rescued after giving birth to 10 pups. Caramel the kitty is approximately 6 months old (as of January 2017) He is very playful, cheerful, and loves other cats. He is also a good hunter. Caramel loves to be cuddled and held. He prefers to be inside, but also enjoys the outdoors. This sweet little hound, Elle Mae, was a stray helped by some very kind people who have now moved. Dr. Tello tells us that she is quite young, has never had pups, and is in good condition. She is very sweet and playful and gets along with other dogs. She looks as though she may be at least part German Short Haired Pointer. 12. The two reformed ferals – Lee and Mia These two cuties were trapped back in July at the Boquete Country Club. Since they were so young when captured, our foster was determined to try to domesticate them, rather than just having them fixed, and turning out two more cats. Her efforts have been successful, and although still a bit timid, these two are more comfortable with people as each day passes. Mia is extremely loving and purrs like a locomotive. Lee is a bit more reserved, but loves attention as well. We would like to try to find a home that could take both of them in as they are very bonded. 14. UPDATE NOVEMBER 11, 2016: Alex escaped from the nice people who were looking after him, and has again been found. He is not in an ideal situation right now, and we are looking for a safe place for him to stay. If you can open your heart and home to this handsome guys until he finds a forever home, please contact us. Alex was hit by a car on September 29th and wandered over to a nearby house. These people have generously offered to look after him. ARF took him to the vet to have his leg examined, and thankfully it was not broken, but a very bad sprain that will take some time to heal. He was given painkillers, a vitamin shot, de-wormer and anti-biotics as he also has a urinary tract infection. Alex was the most cooperative patient I have ever seen! Not even a flinch when he was given his shots and even though this guy must have been feeling miserable and in quite a bit of pain, he still had a very loving and gentle disposition. Alex is about 2 years old. We believe he has an owner as he did have a collar on, but no one has come forward as of yet. If the owners are not found, Alex will be put up for adoption. If you would like to donate towards Alex's medical costs, please visit our website. 15. This beautiful girl is only 7 months old and has been living 5 of those months tied up to a chain. Her owners have agreed to surrender her. This is not an ARF dog, as she is not currently in our care, but I have been asked to post this. She is not yet fixed but will be at the David clinic, and is looking for a loving home with a family that will treat her as part of the pack. 16. At animal shelters and rescue groups across the world, there are an abundance of healthy senior pets looking for a special home to cherish them for the rest of their lives. Although shaping the life of a youngster sounds appealing, giving a second change to an older companion can be equally rewarding. They like to share quiet moments, are in most cases trained, and do not chew or scratch everything in sight. Older pets have plenty to offer to adopters – not the least of which is love. Here are the benefits of adopting an adult/older animal: Calm Demeanor: An adult animal’s relatively calm demeanor and less intense exercise needs make them the perfect match for a full-time working household or an older person seeking a friendship and love. Older pets often make excellent, or at the very least, agreeable companions for other household pets as well. Physical Demands are Low: Fortunately, many senior animals are not as demanding as a younger animal. Like any animal, they need quality time in the form of attention and exercise, but the length and intensity of exercise may not be as great. Older dogs, for example, may prefer quiet walks to running or active play and will usually not pull you around on the leash or jump up on you. Already Trained: Adult animals often already know how to live harmoniously with humans. In general, adult pets require far less supervision and less constant care which can make them ideal companions for people with already busy lives. They may already be litter box or housetrained. Size at Maturity is Known: Senior animals, e.g. dogs, cats, small mammals, have already reached their maximum size and weight and therefore will not require additional purchases anticipating future growth needs. For instance, a senior dog, unlike a growing puppy needs only one size collar, harness, lead, dog bed or travel crate. What You See is What you Get: With adopted older pets you will usually know about any behavior challenges or health considerations before you adopt. In other words, there are no surprises. Attached are some of our "seniors" who are looking for a permanent home. Chomba - 7 years old. Bingo - 6 years old. Benji 6 years old. 17. Romeo the Spaniel and Cholo These two boys are each about 3 years old. They will get their vaccinations this week and be neutered in David on November 26. They are both good with cats, dogs, chicken and children, although Cholo has had limited experience with children. They were found by Super Ivan's. It was discovered that a family in the area was feeding them for about two months, but they can no longer take on anymore dogs. They will be ready for adoption after they are fixed on the 26th.

  19. Wendy We happened to follow up on a call to visit a finca near Isla Verde one hour after this pretty girl had given birth to her pups. She is now ready for adoption as all her pups are on their healthy way. Wendy is about two years old and gets along well with other dogs and loves to play. She is a bit on the quiet side – doesn’t bark much. She is on the smaller-medium size, and weighs about 40 lbs. Meet Bobby. He is about 6 months old and a handsome little guy. He is a very sweet and social dog. Bobby was rescued, along with his mom and 5 siblings from the Palo Alto area from a man who was threatening to poison all of them if they were not removed from the area. Judging from his mom’s size, Bobby will probably be on the smaller medium side once full grown. 20. Indy (male Shepard) has a wonderful personality. He loves to play and has a lot of energy. He loves going on long walks and always returns to your side when you call his name. He enjoys playing with other dogs and had no issues with any free dogs that are roaming. Indy likes attention and affection. He likes to lean against you and put one paw on your foot to make sure you stay close by. Sasha is also a wonderful dog. She is quite calm. She is very affectionate and loves being close to you and have you pet her. Sasha is also playful and she and Indy have a special bond since they have grown up together and have never been apart. These two are best buddies and we would like to see them adopted together. They are approximately 4-5 years old and have been fixed. Ideally they are looking for a loving family with a large fenced in yard. The previous owners have both passed away, and they are being looked after by a very nice family who would like to find a very good home for them. 21. Hello everyone! For September, the amount of the monthly donations were $1046.00 and expenses totaled $1034.00. Thank you to everyone who contributed! We received a large contribution this month and we cannot thank the donators enough! Thank you to the “The Maggie Fund” to the tune of $500.00. A special thank you – To Heidi and Mike from Mike’s Global Grill. They donated some items for the Pancake Breakfast and are always so supportive in everything we do………Thank You!!!! 9 dogs and 3 cats found their forever home this month….we are so happy for these furries! If you have any friends or relatives looking for a pet, please direct them to our site or have them contact us, as we have many ready for adoption. Please consider fostering an animal if you are able to do so. When you foster an animal with ARF, we take care of all food and medical expenses – we just need you to provide a loving and protective environment. If you are not in the position to foster an animal, please consider making a donation. Any amount is greatly appreciated. Events: Recap: Pancake Breakfast/Adoption Event: This event turned out to be a great success all around. Thank you to all those that supported us by attending, and to all of our hard working volunteers who made this happen. We actually oversold the event so we have put this on the calendar for next year in February. Three dogs found their forever homes and for those 3 dogs this event made a difference! ARF has a busy November coming up with 3 functions. Make sure to mark your calendars! Bingo – November 3rd at La Villa at the BCP. Cash prizes! Remember, the more people who come, the bigger the prizes are so bring your friends! We just got our new bingo cards in-300-no duplicates, so we have plenty to go around. Thanksgiving Lunch/Dinner! On Thanksgiving Day (November 24th) we will be having a Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings. Rather than slave in the kitchen all day, bring your friends and family and let us do all the work and help the animals at the same time! As a “thank you” to the community for all of your support in the past we will be offering an affordable alternative to what is available in Boquete. As Thanksgiving is associated with a bountiful feast, we would also like to ask those attending to give back and bring a bag of food (Purina/Pedigree/Kirkland) or cat/dog toys to contribute for the many animals we currently have in our care. The tickets will be $20.00. The event will run from 2:00pm-4:00pm at the Animales Building and we will be raffling off two gift baskets with Autumn themed goodies. There will also be a full bar available. Holiday Bazaar for WINOS (Women in Need of Shopping) – This is an afternoon event planned for November 30th at Mike’s Global Grill…..just in time to get started on your Christmas shopping. Many unique vendors will be there selling their wares…….details will be announced shortly. And for December……we are taking a break! Attached are pictures of a couple of long timers with ARF needing a forever home: Buddy and Bingo Buddy was hit by a car and lacking nutrition at the time of his accident. We have had him since April and would really like to find a home for him. He is about 5 years old, medium size, and has a great personality. He loves to play with other dogs and is high energy. He is patient and waits for his food until he is given permission to eat. He does not like rain or thunder and wants to be inside the house during any storms. Bingo has also been with us for quite some time and we would like to find him a forever home to make room for the many other animals out there waiting for a spot. Bingo is fine with being an outside dog. He is about 5 years old and makes an excellent watch dog and loyal companion. He was surrendered to us in February of this year. 23. ARF is having a pancake breakfast on Saturday, October 1st from 9:00am to 11:30am. $10 includes a stack of pancakes, butter, syrup, bacon, fruit and tea or coffee. Juice, Mimosas and Bloody Mary's are also available for purchase. This will be held at the Animales building in Alto Boquete. Mr. Dog with be there with lots of items for your pets......bones, collars, leashes, shampoos, carriers, kennels, beds, outfits and more. He will also have available his engraving machine so you can get an ID tag for your pet if you do not already have one (did you know it is a requirement of the Animal Law 70 in Panama that your domestic animal have a tag, with at least a number to call in case they are found wandering?) Protect your furry friend, and get a tag for him if you don't already have one. Too many animals, that are obviously owned, are found wandering the streets because somehow they managed to escape but they have no ID tag, so there is no way to contact the owner and get them home. We will also have on display many of our dogs and cats that are ready and available for adoption, so if you are looking to add a family member, this would be a great opportunity to come by and meet them. Tickets can be purchased from the ARF tent at the Tuesday market and Mailboxes Etc.......tickets go on sale Tuesday, September 6th. 24. This is Abuela. She is approximately 7 years old and has been spayed. We do not know her story, as she simply “showed up” on someone’s doorstep one day. It is very obvious that for most of her life she was probably on a short chain. Her “elbows” and rear show signs that she was made to sit on a hard surface for long periods of time. Abuela has been tested positive for tick fever, so she will need to be on medication for 3 weeks. She has a very sweet disposition and just wants to be loved. Abuela is a large dog, approximately 70 pounds. When you foster an animal for ARF, all food, medication and vet care is paid for by ARF. 25. This beautiful dog is looking for a good home. The woman currently looking after him has this to say about him: "I live in Potrerillos. There is a beautiful, friendly, loving German Shepard in the neighborhood with bright blue eyes who needs a forever home. His owner barely made it out of the hospital 2 or 3 months ago. His health is in very poor condition and he has had to move into an apartment in David to be closer to the hospital. Unfortunately, the owner could not bring Sanatra with him. Therefore Sanatra is looking for a new home Sanatra gets along very well with my dog and he tolerates my cats. Sanatra has a great disposition." This woman would like to keep Sanatra, however, she cannot afford the additional cost for food, so in the meantime, until we can find him a good home, ARF will be providing food. If you are interested in providing a home or food for Sanatra, please contact us.
