  1. This doesn't make sense because big money in pharma is never immediate. It's many years, perhaps decades, of research away. And it's never predicable. I've seen products reach phase 3 trials and never be approved. Not one penny of profit for millions spent. It's not unusual.
  2. I have to mostly disagree, Keith. The research scientists I worked with made an average of $60k per year at PhD level! They worked weekends and nights if their experiments required it. Often, they were stuck in labs pipetting for hours under a hood. They were the most passionate people I have ever worked with. I witnessed their excitement and joy when products went into clinical trials and finally to market after years of painstaking work. These people were of the highest standard and would never compromise their work. I've seen experiments scrapped because of one small misstep. These are the research people and their motives were always altruistic. Of course it's an industry, what non profit has the kind of money it takes to bring a product to market? The cost of clinical trials is astronomical. Abiding by FDA and other regulatory agencies is costly. What's the alternative? Abandon clinical trials? Ditch the FDA? These are all the things that help to be sure the drugs we use are as safe as possible. Bonnie is right, we could help lowers cost by streamlining our healthcare and insurance systems. The pharmaceutical industry gets a bad wrap. Are there issues, yes. But they are few in comparison to the lifesaving products they bring us.
  3. You think they came up with the polio vaccine so they could lose money? How about whopping cough? Typhoid? Malaria? I can go on. Personally, I'd pay a hell of a lot more money to be cured than go through rounds of treatments only to extend my life.
  4. Thank you! There are plenty of scientists working for non profits on cancer research without a financial motive. And anyone who comes up with a cure for any cancer will be a world wide success and make crap loads of money. The reality is that scientists are very slowly starting to use the word "cure" for a handful of cancers like thyroid, testicular and a few others. These cancers have recovery rates in the high 90 percentiles now. If I'm not mistaken, even early diagnosed breast cancer has a recovery rate in the 90% range. Science is amazing!
  5. ? Best auto-correct typo of the day. Especially since I had a brush with an Easily Insulted Bag recently. ?
  6. That goat, along with the red dog, owns the Wilson Bridge. The dog actually owns the whole damn road!
  7. I know it's late but, helloooo, I said "My view of other sites is that they are also valuable, but the bulk of the info out there is available on one site, Facebook, if you join the relevant groups." Where did you make the jump to all others should go out of business?
  8. What this means is that, via Facebook, a person has access to many groups and therefore more information than any one site. This post is a perfect example, Brundageba hasn't seen updates from Javier and Magaly, where most of their updates are, because they're not on Facebook. My view of other sites is that they are also valuable, but the bulk of the info out there is available on one site, Facebook, if you join the relevant groups.
  9. Felipe Motta in David has a wonderful store near El Rey. You'll find most anything there. Closer to Boquete, Dorado's market has a good selection but so does Super Baru and we've found their prices are better.
  10. Chiriquí is a very large "neighborhood" You are not at risk of developing malaria, zika or dengue in the Boquete area. The mosquitoes that carry these diseases cannot survive at our altitude. Also, there is no vaccine available in Panama or the States that prevents dengue or zika. Use deet and get rid of standing water if you're at sea level.
  11. OkOk I read (most of) it three times but I can't see the actual last date of operation for AaC. Dec 31 maybe, based on the fact that payment is due to Rodney on Jan 1.
  12. In the same strip mall with Dorado's market and fereteria. Right at the end. Great place for breakfast or lunch. One of the gals speaks perfect English, if you need.
  13. Take my word for it Penny, Nacional's breakfast is really awful. And if the food didn't make it bad enough, the fact that they don't refill when it runs low makes it even worse. We ate at Ciudad de David a couple of weeks ago and it was really good. Not cheap, but good. And it's buffet, so no waiting. Also, Olga's at Alto is good, and so CHEAP. Yummy hojaldres too
  14. Hotel Nacional used to be good, but now it is just so bad ? Hotel Ciudad de David is good. No chance in hell I'm eating at McD's. Id rather eat a pbj at home.
  15. What a day to wash all the bedding. I've got a nice clean and dry mattress pad, wet sheets in the dryer and a half washed comforter in the washer.
  16. Someone told me today that the new vet was not licensed to practice in Panama and is no longer there.
  17. I can understand your confusion about that but I don't think Howard is affiliated with the recycle center. I think he is just trying to drive business their way so they don't disappear.
  18. I wasn't confused at all. They closed and then they opened in the new spot they said they would open at. Anyone who asked knew that it would take them a few weeks to get set up. I'm not sure who "too many people" are. The only thing I've seen is Howard trying to get them visibility and support.
  19. ARF has no fosters homes available. This is why I have not filed a denuncia against my neighbors. I have no idea what would happen to the dog if she were confiscated. It's better that she stay with them so I can feed her and keep an eye on her.
  20. Where do these surrendered animals go? Surely the Corregador is not taking them home.
  21. Wow, I keep reading this post and it really scares me that someone admits they know nothing about Sharia law and then proceeds to "inform" themselves by watching YouTube videos. What the hell! Friggin read some books, pick up an unbiased newspaper, talk to an average Muslim. In other words... Educate yourself! And YouTube doesn't count. Jeebus?
