Our Food Drive campaign raised $14,474, and we have many donors who are making recurring monthly donations. Thank you for your support. In 2021 we delivered over 14,000 pounds of pet food, and more than 17,000 pounds in 2022. The cost of this program is over $1,300 per month. We've shared stories about our local heroes like Sra Carmen and Sr Virgilio, Sra Anays and Sra Uva. They quietly feed and care for animals who have no one or anywhere to go. These people are citizens of Boquete who you might never meet, who will never get awards or recognition for what they do, but they are the real backbone of our community. To us at Amigos de Animales, Sra Carmen, Sr Virgilio, Sra Anays and Sra Uva are heroes. Please help us continue to help our local heroes and the animals they care for. $10 per month will help feed one dog or cat. Will you sponsor one or more dogs or cats? - donate here   HAPPY 80th BIRTHDAY TO OUR FOUNDER, RUBY McKENZIE On January 14th we threw a surprise 80th birthday party for Ruby McKenzie. We had close to 100 people who attended, including 5 vets. Ruby helped start the clinic in 2005, and she has been the driving force behind what it has become today. We have sterilized over 23,000 animals, and the impact on the health of animals and humans is measurable. Ruby is an incredible person and the community is so lucky to have her! Happy Birthday Ruby!   PLEASURES OF PANAMA FUNDRAISER - COMING SOON! These certificates are an easy way to help. They are available at the Animales table at the BCP Tuesday Market or at our clinics. You also can send an email to Cary at Animalesdeboquete@gmail.com   GET TO KNOW OUR AMIGOS DE ANIMALES FAMILY This month we're featuring: Name: Katrina Kneebone Katrina is bilingual, helps big dogs in Recovery at our clinics, and coordinates our education program in our local schools. Here is her story: I am an educator, and I am involved with the Amigos de Animales program for 5 years taking awareness of pet sterilization into elementary schools. Here I am explaining what that involves. After my Rottweiler departed for the Elysium Fields, each month I would get my “big dog fix” at the clinic, sitting quietly on the rug and resuscitating the large breeds from their anesthesia . Two years went by and then, Leslie Sherling, who had befriended me, noticed that I was speaking Spanish and helping the student volunteers. “We need you,” she said, and that is how I became the lead person for the Amigos de Animales schools outreach program. There are 13 schools in the rural areas of Boquete and our mission is to reach out to these students, teach them about pet care, and encourage them to bring their pets to the clinic for spaying. COVID curtailed our efforts for two years, but in October of 2022 we picked up again and managed visits to five schools before the school year ended. Click here for the rest of Katrina's story and more pictures on our website.   KIBBLE & BITS: • Food Drive: We are continuing to feed needy dogs and cats in Boquete at a cost of over $1,300 per month. 11. LEARN A TAKE-AWAY PRACTICE TO "SHAKE OFF" THE ONGOING STRESSES OF LIFE. TRE: Tension & Trauma Release Exercises Workshop: January 29th, Sunday 1-3 pm at THE STUDIO at The Haven Wellness Resort & Spa Instructor: Joy Alexander $45 (prices includes a FREE follow-up class, Feb 1st, Wed 1-2 pm) WHAT IS TRE? TRE® is an innovative series of exercises that help the body to release deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. Created by Dr. David Berceli, TRE safely triggers a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating that releases muscular tension, and calms down the nervous system. When the 'tremor mechanism' is activated in a secure and controlled environment, the body is motivated to return back to a state of balance. TRE is a somatic body based practice especially effective for people suffering with stress, anxiety, trauma or PTSD. It doesn't require talking about an event, feeling or issue, therefore it overcomes the language barriers that can bring up added stress. TRE is based on the findings that stress, tension and trauma are both psychological and physical. The reflexive muscle vibrations in TRE are known to feel pleasant and soothing. After doing TRE, the majority of people report feeling peaceful with a sense of well-being. IN THIS WORKSHOP: • You will learn about neurogenic tremors -- our body's natural inbuilt recovery system. • What TRE is, why it was developed, and how it works. • TRE’s set of seven safe, simple tension & trauma releasing exercises that are designed to trigger the body’s ‘tremor mechanism’ • You will have an experience of activating the neurogenic tremor in a supportive group environment. • You will leave with a self-help tool that you can use to regulate your own nervous system -- as needed! IN THE FOLLOW-UP CLASS: This class will be a review and practice of the TRE exercises... with another opportunity to experience the 'tremor mechanism'. We will also discuss 'next steps' for those who want to continue with self-lead or guided sessions. About Joy Alexander Joy is the Head of The Studio's Yoga Program at The Haven Wellness Resort & Spa, and is passionate about what she does! She has been teaching yoga & meditation classes throughout the Boquete community since 2014. Joy's interest is the body-mind connection, especially how it relates to patterns of tension / trauma held within our physical structure. She helps guide others through combinations of awareness, movement, stillness, and breath to safely facilitate innate healing, clear the body's energetic pathways, and balance the nervous system. Born into a 'yoga family', Joy grew up practicing both yoga and meditation from an early age. (Her mother opened one of the earliest yoga studios in Southeastern Massachusetts.) She continued her studies in yoga... exploring a variety styles such as Hatha, Vinyasa, Kripalu and Bikram Yoga. However, it wasn’t until 2010 that she found and fell in love with the discipline of Ashtanga, deepening her practice even more. Now a registered yoga instructor (500 hr Yoga Alliance certification), she is realizing her dream in Boquete, Panama. Along with Yoga Certifications and an intensive 750 hour massage education, Joy has extensive training in energy work and alternative healing modalities including 120 hrs of Polarity Therapy, and Lomi Lomi Certification Levels 1 &2. Most recently, Joy completed a TRE (Tension & Trauma Release Exercise) Certification in 2022. She brings her knowledge of the body — both energetic and physical — into her teaching style.
