  1. But gas (in Volcan) is now 1.17 per liter for 91 which if my math is correct is not near the $3.25 price, so lets say we want to save money on gas, do we complete the form? Is the form just for business and agro? Do we just wait a bit and see? Where's a good place to get more info as it develops? I want to store 15 gallons but when I can access the cheaper price.
  2. I noticed they just recently added a choice in the drop down menu for passenger vehicles. So this https://combustible.panamasolidario.gob.pa/registro.html site is still the way the government has decided to go and will be used? Does anyone know how the reimbursement will take place? Some have expressed concerns that this is the start of a future social credit system here. Although I am aware of the globalist push, I find this insufficient for that purpose, but I wont rule it out and would love some deep dive discussion on how this could work. With that possibility in mind. If your passenger car is owned by your corporation, would you use Cedula, RUC, or Passport to sign up for this? I would think using RUC might identify more people than just using my Cedula. Thoughts?

  7. Was told by a paralegal studying to be a lawyer who writes legal documents to help pay for school while he studies law, that he cannot legally write a POA. I wonder what the intent of the translator at the notary office who wrote me a POA solely governing furniture was. I was quoted $200 lawyer fee plus government fees by one attorney. I will be getting a second quote from another whose English is also very good. There will be no misunderstanding the next time. I plan to use our US POA as a guide. I have also learned that one could answer customs that they are not a resident of Panama when travelling out of the country with an absentee parent so long as the child has a foreign passport.
  8. A update to the Power of Attorney (POA) created without lawyer. This was originally created at the public notary office in David. We requested a document be created to give my wife "complete and unlimited" power of attorney in Panama with no expiration (unless revoked). All requests were verbal (our first mistake). My wife and son, both legal residents of Panama, were flying to the states for the holidays. Panama law requires a recent notarized letter no more than 90 days old authorizing a single parent traveling with a child across the border has permission from the other parent, to prevent kidnappings where there may be no jurisdictional recourse. We figured this would be a good opportunity to test our POA. With full knowing that anything that could go wrong in Panama, I also wrote a brief letter explaining to any official concerned that the document given to my wife gives her POA over all of my affairs which does not expire. I expressed my permission to allow my wife to exit the country with our son and included a copy of my Panama Drivers License. At the bottom I signed and dated it for the same day they were traveling. All of it was written in Spanish using Google Translate. I concluded this extra letter with "please make a photocopy of all of these documents for your protection." I instructed my wife to only show the letter if the POA did not work. She was rejected by the first two agents. Each time she was rejected she would reenter another line and try again. The third agent read the POA front to back word for word and stated this is "a power of attorney for furniture". She made copies of everything and instructed my wife that if she had a birth certificate copy showing that I was the father that the extra letter that I created would suffice. This is Panama, what works once for me is no guarantee that it will work for you. The last customs agent did let them pass but now we have to redo this POA or change our son's name to "Furniture". Will we do this at the notary? Call me stubborn but I believe it can be done, so yes. Will I have someone write what I want it to say in Spanish beforehand? Absolutely.
  9. As much as I hate to admit it I have almost run over locals in about 25 different instances. The only solution is taking extra care and not being quick to accelerate.
  10. I believe we did a complete POA using just by requesting the notary create a document giving full power of attorney to my wife and then had it notarized there also. No lawyer was needed. We will test it when my wife travels with my son later this month.
  11. Another thing to consider is RESIDENCY LAWS of the STATE you are departing for TAX PURPOSES. Some states consider you a resident for life if you dont first reestablish yourself in another state in the US. Two states with aggressive tax codes are California and Virginia. Virginia considers you a resident even if you leave the country and declares this in its Partial Year State Tax filing instructions, if you do not take the proper actions as well as expressing your intent to leave in writing. There are a couple other states that are just as possessive and as more states find their deficits increasing along with projected revenues declining I am willing to bet that more states will be getting aggressive in their attempts to collect tax revenue using little other than assumptions and your former and possibly current ties to the state. A former California resident who worked as a real estate agent and left California to permanently move out of the country in 2009 received such a surprise. Three years later the state of California's department of taxation notified her that she owed a $400,000.00 tax bill based on nothing more than the average income of a real estate agent in the state and the fact that she had last resided there and not established herself in another state of the US. The problem is that many do not take the necessary steps to 'divorce' themselves from the state. When you move to another state in the US what usually makes the move official is the surrender of the previous state driver's license and application for licensing in the new state Yet when you move overseas no such procedure occurs where your state is notified of your new residency. Few people fail to see the importance of surrendering your old state driver's license. This may prove to be a costly souvenir. You can find some of the needed steps to take and the language to use spelled out in the Partial Year Tax form instructions for your state. Be warned that not everything is spelled out for you so you have to consider what contracts and priveleges have you established with the state and rescind, cancel, or surrender them formally as opposed to just allowing them to expire. Virginia looks at whether or not you have any remaining property interest. Did you cancel and surrender your drivers license once you received one in the country in which you now reside? Did you rescind your voter registration? Yes, even an uncancelled library card can be used against you as well as any document or permit issued by the state which you do not surrender. In addition to all of this the Commonwealth of Virginia requires "Expressed Intent" and still reserves the right to consider you their resident, but if you take all of the necessary steps you are more likely to be treated as a non resident. Give one of these possessive states any reason to consider you their resident and you may have an unpleasant surprise tax bill sent to you in the future.
